Comment:

[January 2006] A mix of my favourite 'girls covering boys' and 'boys covering girls' tracks, and ones I thought my friends would appreciate.

01. One of the funnest covers ever. FOUR MINUTES OF FANTASTIC FUN. Awesome. I mean, I love cheeky Irishness of the original, but the ska-ness and the big band-y-ness of this cover is just. FUN. If I didn't think it'd piss off people who read this, this whole bit would be written ENTIRELY IN CAPS.
02. Extremely pretty and as good as the original (which I didn't think was possible).
03. Amazing how it rocks up and out before bringing you right back down again. (And way better than Michael BublT's version).
04. Bluesy, smooth, soulful and tuneful whereas Dylan's is rougher, off-key. Love the change from 3rd to 1st person.
05. Ben Gibbard does the most awesome covers.
06. I admit it, I loved Ronan Keating's version. Sweet, twinkly, inoffensive pop. I prefer Allison's version, but they sound very similar.
07. Strangely soulful, how Fran starts singing this (plus the hint of Scottish accent is killer), soon descends into mockery with the high pitched still believes.
08. Again as brilliant as the original, but in a very different way. I mean, my dad likes it.
09. Acoustic. Oh yeah. In the verses his voice gets wobbly on the high notes, but when the oh-so-creepy guitar kicks in for the bridge/chorus and his voice get that low, sexy tone. Mmm.
10. Pretty and slow, much like Iron & Wine's cover only it doesn't bore me half as much. Very. deep - with low vocals, the low notes of the piano, it's satisfyingly moody.
11. Beautiful and hearfelt acoustic (with an amazing soaring fiddle/violin part).
12. I especially like how the female vocals (I forget which one sings it) are stronger and rougher than Knopfler's. Very similar overall.
13. Live and so more acoustic and stripped down. Natalie's accented vocals give a lovely mysterious and interesting tinge to the lyrics.
14. Rocky backing music with lounge music vocals. The guitar and trumpet parts are particularly funky.
15. Excellent, charismatic, attention-grabbing - in her usual style.
16. Slower than Dylan, with a softer, subtle guitar accompaniment, it's one of those quiet summer evening songs.
17. Live, and you can tell the audience love it - his voice is amazing, and as ever all he really needs is a piano.
18. A wonderfully catchy, acoustic folky-pop song with lovely harmonies. There's a gorgeous clarity and strength to Dar's voice here.
19. I'm not mad about Colplay but 'The Scientist' is one of my favourite songs, Amiee does an amazing job of it (very similar). So good.

Nice job Sam, I really need to hear that Ben Lee track, the original is one of my guiltiest pleasures. You are gonna make a volume 2 with some Evan Dando right? ;)

Looks good! I did a similar mix called Role Reversal, and we didn't duplicate a single song. To do the paragraph space, see this mix for some html tips: www.artofthemix.org/FindAMix/getcontents.asp?strMixID=99734

And yes, Evan Dando must have covered at least a half a dozen songs originally performed by women. That boy definitely has a feminine side -- he once appeared on the cover of NME wearing a flowery dress.

This looks great! I know very few of these (I think just the Si,one, Cake, Dresden Doll cuts), but your notes have definitely piqued my appetite for the rest of it.

An object lesson in accompanying notes. Also a very very good mix. Most enjoyable. A+ and a merit on the side.

Barrydali - Ta, and I hope you approve of the Ben Lee track. It looks like I'll have to make another volume now won't I! Moe - I have no idea why I didn't think of using html to format it. Mental block I suppose. Nomates - I'm completely unable not to write about the music when I'm doing mix CDs/naming my favourite tracks. Sometimes I think I babble too much!

Yes I very much approve of that cover Sam, plus there is the added bonus of now being able to sing along without the stigma attached to doing my best Kylie impression, not that I have a Kylie impression you understand and anyone who says different is a filthy liar!

Little Spencer Boys; I'd be happy to send you a copy if you'd like. Might take me a week or so, as I need to buy some more blanks, and the whole 'studying' as part of student life starts up again next week, but it'd get there.
