31. Beatles - - Roll Over Beethoven
========================================

All hail the great guitar god!

This is a 3rd-generation offspring of AOTM collaboration, here - -
a few weeks back Air Raid put out
a Chuck Berry tribute mix
which got me thinking about trying to do the same, so he very kindly sent me his mix to get started with,
& then I remembered that Grandmaster Sean "my Ding-a-Ling" Lally had long ago created & shared with me his own
outstanding
God Bless Chuck Berry ,
so mostly what I've done here is meld those two collections, plus I've added a few favorites from my own vaults,
plus picked up the Neko Case number from
jenergy ,
and the Fabulous Jokers from that fabulous joker
Cruella.
Mix 'em all together & what have you got? something Berry delicious!

Too many versions of "brown eyed handsome man," I know, but they're all good, so what're you gonna do?
And yes, the David Grisman version of Maybellene is downright strange, but that's why it's on here.

A thought that struck me while listening to this, maybe others have noticed this before, but wouldn't you say that
Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues" owes a big, big debt to Chuck Berry's "Too Much Monkey Business"?
Compare & contrast:
Same thing every day - gettin' up, goin' to school.
No need for me to complain - my objection's overruled, ahh!
Been to yokohama - been fightin' in the war.
Army bunk - army chow - army clothes - army car, aah!
Too much monkey business for me to be involved in!

Get sick, get well, Hang around a ink well
Ring bell, hard to tell If anything is goin' to sell
Try hard, get barred, Get back, write braille
Get jailed, jump bail, Join the army, if you fail . . .

eh?
-------------------------- * -------------------

I can't manage loading up a whole mix like some people can, but here's a teaser for you -- it will only be here for 7 days
or 10 downloads, whichever comes first, so will be disappeared by May Day, but in the meantime,
it's got a back beat, you can't lose it:
oh baby doll (kirby st romaine).

Very nice Joey. Haven't heard some of these. And don't be so hard on Dylan. After all, Brian Wilson started out to make his fortune using Chuck's melodies. Thank god he moved on before he tried to write surfing lyrics to My Ding-a-ling.

This looks great, I would also recommend a local St. Louis tribute done to benefit our local community radio station: Brown Eyed Handsome Man: St. Louis Salutes the Father of Rock and Roll. It features regional artists (including the Bottle Rockets and Jay Farrar).
