Comment:

Girls covering boys. Far from an original idea -- the estimable Ion Moe did it far better way back when (and where have you been lately, Mr. Moe? Please don't leave us behind...). But I've been listening to a bit of Barbara Manning and Kirsty MacColl lately, both of whom have done some splendid interpretations of others' works (must-haves for volume 2: Manning's rockin' take on the Pretty Things' "SF Sorrow," MacColl's gorgeous take on the Kinks' "Days"), and just figured I needed to put this together.

POSTSCRIPT: Made a few last-minute swaps before the final burn. Replaced the Breeders' cover of Sebadoh's "The Freed Pig" with a Who cover -- the Sebadoh cover is amazing (and the perfect choice for that band, as it's a great fuck-off to an old band), but it's from a 7" and the sound wasn't quite up to snuff. And I didn't want 2 Who covers, so I deleted the Petra Haden song. The Petra contribution, from her a capella interpretation of The Who Sell Out, was cool, but can also wear thin, so I instead opted for some Lucinda from the Gram Parsons tribute disc.

This mix puts a Mona Lisa smile on my face. Some great selections, and several that intrigue me -- like MLL covering an obscure Pink Floyd song. New UK sensation Lily Allen has also done some excellent covers worth checking out. And yes, I'm still around. Thanks for your concern. Will try to get a mix up this month.

This is really excellent, and with some choices that I didn't see coming at all - e.g. the Donna Matthews. Great Bettie Serveert pick too. Also have to say that I'm surprised at how natural the Mona Lisa looks clutching a guitar!
