Comment:
Nineteen eighty-eight was the year when metal battled rap for the musical consciousness of America's youth, and the hair farmers ultimately lost. Guns N' Roses couldn't have been any bigger (and how much more street cred could they possibly have had, with drummer Steven Adler wearing a T.S.O.L. T-shirt in the video for "Sweet Child o' Mine"?). Run-DMC came up with some fancy scratchin' while bustin' rhymes in "Run's House." R.E.M.'s rapid-patter classic "It's the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" turned out to be true, as they were about to sign with Warner Bros. and explode commercially. Poison was having "Nothin' but a Good Time" but the Headbanger's Ball was coming to a close.
