Comment:

There are so many strings to Dr. John’s bow, he could supply a whole army of archers — don’t forget, he was a pop/rock session man in L.A. before his solo career took off, and there’s a whole world of music lurking beneath that rakish beret. One minute, he comes off like Professor Longhair with a Santa suit on his one-man run through “Silent Night”; the next, he introduces Cole Porter’s “Love for Sale” to the sultry, swaying pleasures of the second-line groove. And on the old Ray Charles R&B stomper “Mess Around,” he swings so hard, you’re likely to dislocate something just listening to it.
