Considering his lofty list of accomplishments as a bandleader, it’s possible to forget that Benny Goodman was first and foremost a phenomenal clarinetist. His tough, bluesy tones, jazzman’s genius for improv, and a touch of classical technique made him a reedman to reckon with. Even as early as the 1928 trio track “Clarinetitis,” his gift is obvious, and he already sounds prepared to bust out of Dixieland’s borders for uncharted territory. Goodman lives up to the title of the quartet cut “Runnin’ Wild,” wailing out his love affair with hot jazz for all the world to hear. “But Not for Me” eases off the breakneck pace for a groove-grounded reminder of exactly why Goodman was called The King of Swing.
