Full of apocalyptic fervour, spiritual conviction, and social activism, Culture's 1977 debut album, Two Sevens Clash, stands as a roots reggae landmark, hugely popular in politically volatile Jamaica at the time of its release and picked up in the U.K. by disaffected punks who viewed the band as soul companions. Formed by the charismatic Joseph Hill, the vocal trio — backed initially by the Revolutionaries (featuring Sly & Robbie) and produced by the Mighty Two (Joe Gibbs and Errol Thompson) — Culture blazed a mixed stylistic trail through the late '70s, pouring big-band, rocksteady, and calypso elements into their rootsy brew. "Lion Rock" appeared after the band's 1982 split (the title track on what was essentially a solo album for Hill), and various reunions and lineups would carry the ever-crucial band into the 21st century. During a 2006 gig in Berlin, Hill tragically collapsed and died, after which Kenyatta Hill respectfully continued his father's legacy on vocals.
