Comment:

thanks to rob for the elvis costello track, and to elise for extended borrow of her bob dylan vinyl.

i am a child of the 80's. i don't remember anything but high unemployment figures. i have lived with the constant threat of recession. the memory of my first paw paw: i ate that while the new footage of some famine, somewhere, etched itself into my eyelids. i can't eat pawpaws any more. and a product of fairytales and period dramas of course i wanted collete dinigan dresses, of course i wanted martinis, and of course i walked into a jazz bar when i was 15 and the barman didn't ask for ID. i guess we coukld say it's all his fault. or blame ny sister for showing me breakfast at tiffany's, or my mother and her cutting tounge labelling fat and skinny like veryone else's mothers labelled nice and bitchy. and this crap recipe and my own unfortunate tendencies to play mind games, lie and keep all the best rosie-isms for those few who i shared the 2am taxi home with and here i am. alone. i'm reminded of a high fidelity quote but i can't remember which tense it's in: "did i listen to pop music because i was miserable, or was i miserable because i listened to pop music," i hope that's righty. at leats my tapes are here, and they don't dispose of me for the next best thing- namely midori. i'm guess i'm just another teenager, playing at angst, trying it on like i might try on jeans in the relentless search for the pair that make me loot skinny. here's another tape, one for the pile. a rosie-ism that i'll give to someone in a taxi at 2am in a vain hope someone might make me feel better.

Brilliant pix, Rosie. Especially the Bessie Smith and Dylan ones. The debussy pick was a touch of class too. You should turn your talents to writing as well, because you have a great descriptive style.

I agree w/Gerry about Bessie and Bob, and I like the Bjork and Moby picks as well. Thanks for explaining why my wife, a child of the 80's, is so afraid of me losing my job, while me, a 70's slob, worries more about impending gas shortages! If you give these tapes away in taxis, that positive Karmas bound to slap back at you one of thes days!

what are pawpaws?? maybe pawpaw is an aussie-ism...they're a fruit, and they're also called papaya... a tropical fruit, we don't get them cheap down here very often.

This is great, and the Beth Orton track fits so perfectly here. Is it the version from the Everything But The Girl mix CD? Apparently Ben Watt produced her latest release, which may be along similar lines.

I love this mix. You're a fuckin' good writer too, and I'd like to read anything else you've written (feel free to send random things my way). Very good mix.
