Comment:

As the decade came to a close in 2009, it didn't just make room for next year's procession of pop stars and buzz-stirring breakouts; it also said sayonara with the subtlety of a shotgun, leaving a trail of truly Essential tunes in its wake. Not just the names you've been hearing for years, either — artists like Black Eyed Peas, Green Day, Jay-Z and Beyoncé. If anything, 2009 belonged to the eye-boggling wardrobe and chart-climbing hooks of Lady GaGa, a constant risk-taker who reminded us of Madonna in her early days and destroyed the division between art and artifice. And, hey, if that's not your thing, the greatest-hits portion of our look at 2009 also includes feel-good country (Taylor Swift), the first lady of American Idol (Kelly Clarkson), and rock's latest stadium-bound success story, Kings of Leon.
