Comment:

Driven by a couple of former Raccoons, guitarist Toby Leaman and drummer Scott McMicken, Philadelphia quirk-rockers Dr. Dog belie their rap-sounding moniker with a buoyant raft of experimental, '60s-leaning lo-fi pop tunes that make a virtue of unpredictable song structures, D.I.Y. simplicity, and free-wheeling imagination. Some songs will bring to mind the Beatles — check out "Oh No" from Easy Beat — others place you in a rustic backwater barnyard with the Band (on "Worst Trip" you can picture the backing-vocal lineup as a gallery of old-time scoundrels), and the outfit has a way with harmony that stands up to favorable comparison with the Beach Boys ("Ain't It Strange"). Big-time quality in a rough-hewn, handmade package? What's not to like.
