While it took Diddy a couple years to jumpstart his solo career with the shimmering Grandmaster Flash hook of "Can't Nobody Hold Me Down," shades of his chart-conquering sound have popped up since the mid-'90s, starting with such club-pleasing singles as "Get Money." The platinum EZ Elpee production — see also: "Special Delivery" from Diddy's We Invented the Remix compilation — grabs its quiet-storm groove from one of Roy Ayers' right-hand ladies (Sylvia Striplin) and stars a couple of key Diddy collaborators, the Notorious B.I.G. and Lil' Kim. "The City Is Mine" also seizes Diddy's hip-hop soul sound by the beats, with Biggie's undisputed heir, Jay-Z, running circles around an Eagles-inspired Blackstreet chorus and the sleek sax lines of the Neptunes' Chad Hugo. Sure enough, Diddy and his production team, the Hitmen, showed up on the very same album, cooking up such Jigga Man jams as "I Know What Girls Like," "Where I'm From," and "(Always Be My) Sunshine." As for shot-callin' artists who rule the boardroom and the radio dial, Jermaine Dupri is simply a shorter version of Diddy, with a bling-flashing theme song ("Ballin' Out of Control") to boot. Speaking of artist who've shared Diddy's spotlight, you haven't heard the half of it until you've combed through the cuts of everyone from Mary J. Blige to Lloyd Banks, from Timbaland to Usher
