Comment:

It took one hell of a crooner to deny the Beatles a Number One slot at the height of their fame, but that's exactly what swarthy, Indian-born/Leicester-raised heart-throb Engelbert Humperdinck did with his first hit, "Release Me," in 1967 (at the expense of "Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields"). So, the lamb-chopped, golden-voiced legend was born, and a run of seven straight Top Five hits in the U.K. would follow, including "The Last Waltz" and "Les Bicyclettes de Belsize." Four years before Elvis Presley scored with "There Goes My Everything," Humperdinck had taken that song into charts on both sides of the Atlantic, and as the years unfolded he would become lounge pop's undisputed King of Romance. Ladies, if you're feeling faint, proceed to Humperdinck's Next Steps with caution.
