Like any generation-defining band, Foo Fighters are a Frankenstein's monster of artistically defining roots and influences. And when you're talking about those roots and influences, you simply can't get around Nirvana, particularly "Marigold," which found Dave Grohl emerging as a songwriter in his own right. On the new Foos album, Wasting Light, he cranks up the volume on that songwriting, inviting Krist Novaselic and Nevermind producer Butch Vig back into the fold. Frequent Foo Fighter/Nirvana guitarist Pat Smear drops a steroid-laden, speed-laced fuzz-bomb in the Germs' punk pièce de résistance "Lexicon Devil." Grohl's first major band, Scream, emerged as a titan on the D.C. punk scene, alongside Bad Brains and Minor Threat, though they weren't the least bit shy about tackling an arena-sized anthem like "Gods Look Down." And with the power-chord-over-snare-bash blast of "Surrender," arena heroes Cheap Trick deliver a high-octane hybrid of classic rock, heavy metal, and power pop. From R.E.M. to The Clash to Led Zeppelin, every corner of the rock world gave the Foos their cues.
