Comment:

A tribute to the best pop band of the 70's, and a band second only to the Velvet Underground in terms of being utterly ignored during their career but having a huge influence on modern indie rock bands. An official tribute was planned a couple years ago, with an amazing line-up of artists, but it fell through; a few of those tracks showed up as b-sides (i.e. Wilco, Matthew Sweet, Gin Blossoms). An indie label did release a Big Star tribute a couple years back, but it featured primarily unknown/unsigned bands and was largely mediocre (though I've included a few highlights here). Others come from a variety of albums and live performances. (Thanks to Ion for the Kim Deal track; you'll have a copy of this shortly.)

Wow. I've been on a Big Star kick lately, and imagining this really scratches my itch. I love both Big Star covers I've heard by Elliot Smith("Thirteen" also, but that song has been quite well represented itself). I think his voice suits the material nicely. Great, great stuff here.

Also great! Maybe it's time for another round of trades, eh? I love the Posies version of "Feel", too. Flip-side of "I am the cosmos", right?

Sean -- I've heard the Posies' take on "Feel," but don't own it. I'd love to track down a copy and update this mix (the Loud Family track is just a placeholder, as it's from an mp3 source, violating my rule against using mp3's on mixes; the Epic Soundtracks medley is probably expendable as well). Sally, you really owe it to yourself to pick up Big Star's first two albums (#1 Record & Radio City, available on a single disc). Their third & final disc is great, too, but a bit more downbeat and challenging.

love the Big star and this looks really tasty too and i really love thirteen too

There is actually a studio version of Elliott Smith's cover of "Thirteen" that I found as a god quality mp3 (I assume that the "Nighttime" cover you used is a live one). I just think Smith is one of the best folks around when it comes to covers.

I've got several live versions of Elliott doing "Thirteen" (which I omitted here for space), but have never heard the studio version. Is it available anywhere as a non-MP3 file?

very cool, I love Big Star. Did any one ever cover "Get What You Deserve"? ,Thats my favorite song of theirs.

I'm not aware of the studio version of Elliott Smith's cover of "Thirteen" bing on any commercially available CD. I did include it in my Elliott Smith Studio Rarities mix though (although that is mostly mp3-sourced, which I understand that you are not fond of).

Yes, this looks truly fine. Glad I was able to contribute, and I look forward to hearing it. And I second Marc's recommendation of #1 Record/Radio City. I think the production of that record/CD is astonishing, considering it was recorded in the early 70s.

And has anyone else noticed that the "wish we had a joint so bad" line mysteriously disappeared in the Cheap Trick version of In The Street?

My sentiments exactly re: Big Star. Sorry I didn't get those tracks to you... it's certainly nothing personal but more indicative of the way my life has been over the past few months. I'll still send them with other discs eventually if you'd care to revise or do a vol. II.

No sweat, Rob... I can always make another go at this when you get a breather. And yes, Ion, pretty silly that Cheap Trick had to change the lyrics. Though certainly no sillier than MTV editing out every conceivable reference to drugs while joyously showcasing as much female booty as can be fit onto the small screen.

This is fantastic! It doesn't matter how many different ways I've heard Thirteen done, it's always great. Also, I've never heard that Matthew Sweet cover but I'll bet that sounds awesome!

Wow. A while ago I noticed I had many Big Star covers and thought of making a comp, but I stalled at six covers, not enough for a mix. Excellent job. And a great cover too.

Very cool. I'd love to trade for a copy of this. I've got a Game Theory Christmas fan club tape I committed to CDR that has them doing a few bars of "Jesus Christ" as well.

I've just stumbled across this and i'm, quite frankly, gobsmacked. I concur with your statement, the best pop band of the 70s, if not all time. If i saw this CD in a shop i'd snap it up. Therefore if there's nothing of mine you wish to trade for i will pay money, i will mow your lawn every week for life, anything. But please let me hear it.
