Comment:

The fact that Depeche Mode is one of the most massive British imports of all time is more than surprising. It’s downright shocking. And not just because Martin Gore’s leather-bound stage look is more appropriate for secret S&M clubs than sold-out hockey arenas. Try how the band’s survived decades of fickle trends, major lineup changes, and debilitating drug habits to sell more than 100 million albums worldwide. And we’re not talking about sugar-dusted singles here; we’re talking pitch-dark pop music that appeals to club kids, indie rockers, and brooding goths in equal measure, as epitomized by Violator, a Top 10 smash that blended hip-hop breaks with the blues (“Personal Jesus”), moonlit funk with shaken-and-stirred synths (“Policy of Truth”), and arena rock aspirations with ridiculously catchy dance music (“Enjoy the Silence”).
