Comment:

We don't mean to minimize the contributions of minimalist giants, such as Philip Glass, Terry Riley, or LaMonte Young, but since we have minimal space, we thought it wise to bring into focus some of the music's lesser-known masters. If Arvo Pärt's "Summa" calls to mind the world of Gregorian chants and early medieval polyphony, that's no surprise; in fact, its soaring vocals open with the Credo from the Roman Catholic Latin Mass: "Credo in unum Deum." Mother Mallard's Portable Masterpiece Company, widely regarded as the world's first synthesizer ensemble, takes the proceedings in a more secular — not to mention more overtly ambient — direction with the starkly gorgeous landscape of "Train (1970)." And in Gavin Bryars' poignantly haunting "The Sinking of the Titanic: II. Titanic Hymn (Autumn) All Strings," you can hear both echoes of "Amazing Grace" and the groaning, otherworldly sounds of a huge ship disappearing beneath the Atlantic's surface. But don't stop there; from John Adams to Joan Tower, from Henryk Gorecki to Michael Nyman, the minimalist composers featured here have generated maximum impact.
