Comment:

It’s pretty easy to understand why the chalk-scrawled legend “Clapton Is God” kept popping up all over London in the late ’60s and early ’70s. After all, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s first triple-inductee had cemented his place in history playing guitar with John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, Cream, Blind Faith, and Derek & The Dominos even before stepping into the studio to launch a solo career that’s now sailing into its fifth decade. And the list of stone-cold masterpieces he’s fronted — “Layla,” “Sunshine of Your Love,” “Lay Down Sally,” “Badge,” “Wonderful Tonight,” to name but a few — reads like a programmer’s guide to classic-rock radio. The term “guitar hero” gets tossed around a lot these days, but at least three generations of rockers have looked up to the Slowhand from Surrey as the gold standard when it comes to making a six-string speak.
