Comment:

The final entry in my running series of homemade tribute discs. Had considered expanding this to a 2-cd set, as I've got a fair number of live Kinks covers in my bootleg collection, but opted to keep it a narrower set. Special thanks to Sean Lally, who forwarded me a disc of some tunes I incorporated into this collection. The Kinks back-catalog, particularly their '66-'73 heyday, provides a wealth of great material ripe for covering, and I'm surprised by how few bands have tried. A few of these come from last year's fine This Is Where I Belong tribute, which went a long way towards remedying that situation.

Great job. For years I've wanted to make a kinks covers disc but when the time comes to commit I get Kinks-Kover-Amnesia and suddenly forget what I wanted to include. Killer stuff here - including my personal fave kinks cover, the lyres' "Tired of Waiting".

Marc, this is boss. You hit just about all of my fave covers, and I look forward to hearing a few new ones. I may do a companion piece to this, especially to include a new find: the Delmonas "When I see that boy (girl) of mine". All of these Kovers stack up well against one another. Great job.

Weird, I just used that Fall (the Fall?) version of "Victoria". Anyhow, this is awesome. That YLT cover of "Oklahoma, U.S.A." is one of my favorite covers ever.

This looks great. Perhaps we'll include this in our oft-discussed hypothetical trade?

What a great idea, one who's time had come! Not everyday you see 801 here....., and that Pretenders version is a keeper from way back!

Have you heard the four covers Elliott Smith did at a Kinks tribute concert lately? They're at the Elliott Smith Mini Repository (http://lido.binaryops.com/).

Would it kill you to put Van Halen on? That was what what made me want to check out the kinks in the first place.

Proof positive that Ray Davies achieved pop perfection in the 64-69 period.

There are definitely a lot of other possibilities I skipped due to the inherent limitations of my collection. Would've liked to include Big Star's "Till The End Of The Day" (which is on one of the Third/Sister Lovers reissues) and the Romantics' "She's Got Everything"; plus, Flo & Eddie (ex-Turtles) had a nice take on "Days," but it's never been released on cd. Can't say Van Halen was too high up on my list, though... not that it doesn't have its charms, but I've gone about 200 mixes without ever including any Van Halen and really see no need to change course.

Nice stuff. I definitely miss +sten Warnerbring, though, doing his German version of "Dandy".;) (For German versions of "Lola" and "Apeman", see my own "Diamanten sind fnr immer" . . .)

looks amazing. i've always maintained the kinks should be in the upper reaches of the pantheon, a notch below beatles/stones, on par (or better) with the who. few had a better 60s. i woulda definitely used romantics' 'she's got everything' and the smithereen's 'world keeps going 'round.' just beautiful. care to bend your no-cassette policy and trade for some beatles covers?

Minus the Fountains of Wayne piece of shit, This looks very, very great. Such great songs by an incredible band played by such wonderful bands. Good stuff.

Very nice! Plenty of great picks. I can't even think of a decent Kinks cover that isn't already "covered" here. Can anyone think of a band that Red Kross hasn't covered? ;)

What a great idea! And, judging from the number of comments, this mix really struck a chord with fellow AoTMers. So, well done, then. (And I agree with everyone who says Ray Davies is a genius!)

I always love to hear good covers of the Kinks, and this looks like an exceptional collection. I'd love to hear this one sometime, Marc!

I still have this on my hard drive, so feel free to e-mail me if interested. (Sorry -- my disinterest in cassettes is not based on any moral issues, merely the fact that I disconnected the tape player from my stereo last year and can only listen to tapes if I borrow the little karaoke machine from the kids' room.)
