Comment:

A sequel of sorts to my recent mix of rock songs featuring saxophones, this time around we've got rock & roll with a healthy dose of piano. Thought it would be another down & dirty mix, but ended up with enough for two discs (and still had to cut a few tracks). Tried to do enough era/subgenre hopping to keep things interesting.

This looks great...and I couldn't agree more about your disdain for these two artist mentioned in the title. Though I like some of their earliest material...their overall book of music and most recent material is the epitome of crap, imho.

looks good, hope you get the same comments that I got for my "Eric Clapton must die" mix a couple of years ago

Excellent; loads and loads and loads of great picks, a lot of which I'd never have thought of - really love the Billy Bragg, Clash and Elvis Costello, and it's good to see Quasi and Magnetic Fields there too. Thinking about it, while I can think of an Elton John pick that I like (Benny And The Jets) I can't even think of one where Mr. Joel is concerned.

Hmmm... a piano-heavy mix with no Elton or Billy Joel... Still and all, looks pretty fantastic, you brown dirt cowboy!

Oh fine mix. Watch out though... Billy sent me an email and Elton called. They both said that you must die.

What no Bruce Hornsby or Marc Cohn? Its an outrage! ;) Some great picks here. Lovely and oft overlooked R.E.M track too.

hmm - this would be interesting to hear, as I haven't ever listened much for the paino in rock -- it almost seems antithetical -- well, except for Jerry Lee Lewis of course -- but maybe that just goes to show that rock can absorb anything - sitars, theremins, why not piano?

P.S. Scary cover art!!

I can't get behind your anti-Elton stand, though. His 70s stuff is pretty unbeatable. And Billy Joel - while I'm no fan, some of the songs (though not the production) through 52nd Street (or maybe even Glass Houses) aren't terrible. But hey, I'm not trying to pick a fight (unless you're looking for one!)

Loads of great picks but early Elton is a glaring omission IMHO.

Great idea! I am with Sean though with Elton's 70's stuff. Also I would have added Warren Zevon's song 'Piano Fighter'.

So I guess my anti-Elton stand isn't entirely without controversy. Yet, while I think "Rocket Man" is one of the prettier melodies ever composed, beyond that I can't say there's much of his work I have a need for. But I'll at least admit that his first decade's work was unobjectionable, just not my style; come the 80's, though, and he became truly wretched. As for Billy... well, I kinda like "Captain Jack," and there was that Beatles pastiche from later on, "Scandanavian Skies"... but, again, I have little use for him.

This mix is fantastic. No question about that. However, I also must object to the title. Firstly, and I may be alone in having this opinion, I always thought Ben Folds Five music was very reminiscent of Billy Joel. I spot a track by them on here. As far as Elton goes 'Madman Across The Water' is a fine album, and I think he made some decent tracks certainly pre 1975. But, hey it's only an opinion, and everyone's entitled to one. And nobody in the music industry, apart from Gary Glitter desrves to die. Oh, and Celine Dion...

The most amazing thing about this mix is that you found so many pictures of Billy and Elton together. I guess that Google image search works pretty well. As for the music, you've compiled some of the best 150+ minutes of piano music since Joel and John last released their greatest hits CDs ;)

don't worry, it won't be long (see photo, bottom right). Elton is starting to look like Judi Dench. great list of music, sir, but where's Tori Amos? [kidding.]

Being a piano player myself and fellow hater of Sir Elton and Billy Joel, I would love to hear this. Anything I have in trade would be yours. Did I mention I would love to hear this?

Siobhan beat me to the comment re Benny & The Jets after that I've no beef with your sentiments at all. Some excellent selections, no Mrs.Mills tho?

I agree with your title's sentiment completely (minus Elton's first five years of his solo career). This is great. Let me know what I can send you for these...

What a superb compilation. I was listening to Pretty Ballerina not an hour ago; I'd classify it as more of a harpsichord song. Also, if I were to choose a Rutles song, it would be "Another Day" - it's what I always choose to play when trying to convince people (including myself) I can actually play piano decently. Electrolite, Braniac's Daughter, Surf's Up, and They Don't Know are 4 favourites - many kudods for compiling them in one place.
