Comment:

Oct. 1974 - Chuck E. Weiss meets Tom Waits at "Ebbet's Field" in Denver. Chuck E. (1999) "I met Tom when we were sitting at the little coffee shop next door to the club. I was wearing a chinchilla coat and 3-inch platforms and I thought he was just some bum folk singer. I remember braggin to him about all the people I knew." Later, this became the inspiration for "Jitterbug Boy".
1975 - Tom moves to the Tropicana Hotel on Santa Monica Blvd. Shortly thereafter Chuck E. moves in and they begin hanging out and performing at the Troubador.
Late 1977, Rickie Lee Jones is performing at the Troubador and begins hanging out with Waits and Weiss. Tom Waits (1979) "The first time I met Rickie Lee she reminded me of Jayne Mansfield. I thought she was extremely attractive, which is to say my first reactions were rather primitive, primal even."
Tom and Rickie Lee become romantically linked and with Chuck E. as the third wheel they begin hanging, writing and drinking together.
1979 - Rickie Lee's debut album becomes a hit behind "Chuck E.'s In Love". Tom's sixth album, "Blue Valentine" does not. Chuck E. remains Chuck E. and refuses to trade in on the name recognition and release an album. Tom and Rickie Lee break up. Her second album "Pirates" is purportedly about the break-up. She also records a song Tom wrote (Rainbow Sleeves) on "Girl at Her Volcano". About a year later, Tom meets his future wife, Kathleen. Neither Tom or Rickie choose to talk about the relationship or break up in public. Rickie Lee (2003) - "It's like, isn't there anything else here you want to know. I knew that guy for a year 24 years ago and they're still asking me about it."
Well, Rickie Lee, maybe it's because at a time when cool was at a premium you were three of the coolest people on the planet. It would be like being in the back seat with Kerouc or had a seat at the Algonquin Roundtable or in the writing room for "Your Show of Shows". We all wish we were the drunken fly on the wall.

I like it a lot. I saw Tom Waits solo at UCLA around 77 or 78. He walked onto the stage dragging his acoustic guitar (by the end of the neck) along the floor. bump, bump, bump. As I recall, I liked the show, and I was really enamoured with Night Hawks at the Diner at the time.

I had a friend who saw him about that same time at Duquesne Univ. in Pittsburgh with Bukowski. He said it was life changing. I initially was stoked on Small Change and Nighthawks but kind of put them aside when I discovered Rain Dogs and Swordfishtrombones. I've since rediscovered them. For those of you who would like to read more about these three at that time check out http://www.keeslau.com/TomWaitsSupplement/Extras/rickieandchuck.htm

Wowzers! I love this mix, the concept and the idea of a threesome with Rickie Lee Jones. Not surprising that "Chuck E.'s In Love with the girl that was singing (t)his song".

Very, very nice indeed! Above all, I love the concept for this mix, but it's really well executed too. Great liner notes.
