Comment:
The Cavern Club opens in Liverpool. Allen Ginsberg's poem Howl, printed in England, is seized by U.S. customs officials on the grounds of obscenity. Juan Manuel Fangio, driving for Maserati, wins the Formula One German Grand Prix, clinching (with 4 wins that season) his record fifth world drivers championship, including his fourth consecutive championship (also a record); these two records would endure for nearly half a century.
The first edition of Jack Kerouac's On the Road went on sale. Radio telescope of Jodrell Bank, Cheshire, UK, opened. Jailhouse Rock opens nationally and Elvis Presley continues to gain more notoriety. The Piña Colada was invented by Ramon Marrero, a bartender at Puerto Rico's Caribe Hilton.
We said Hello to Spike Lee, Shane McGowan, Sid Vicious, Siouxsie Sioux, Steve Buscemi, Nick Cave & Billy Bragg.
We said Goodbye to Humphrey Bogart, Eliot Ness, Oliver Hardy, Louis B Mayer & Judy Tyler.
Enjoy the sounds of '57.
Feedback:
So many superb tracks here, too many to mention individual tracks. I'd never had 1957 down as such a good year.
16,19,27 & 28 are hugh favorites.
well you fellas have outdone yourself once again -- wonderful, fantastic, superb, keep the adjectives rolling out -- personal favorites of mine are the johnny cash, sam cooke, miles davis & thelonious monk, though everything is pretty flawless here (gotta mention the opening two as well, which are great)
Oh yeah, baby. And have I mentioned that I think of that Sam Cooke song every time I use YouSendIt to download one of your killah mixes.
A great year and a great mix.
Wow, Killer Year! 1-8, 11, 12, 14, 16, 19, 22-27 are all favs.
Typically wonderful. And, for whatever reason...this sounds great this time o' year!!!!
I'm a big big fan of this series and this offering is of your usual high quality! Here's a challenge, though: do something pre, oh, say, 1930...
It's official: this is my favourite AotM series, ever. And this is another great year; admittedly I've only recently learned to love the '50s but now I'm very glad I do. Love the Buddy Holly, Bobbettes and excelltn Monk pick. Well done again!
As per usual, this really is a "wonder" to behold. Brilliant!
Oh the innocence of the times is what comes to mind, that & what a great mix, JLL & Link Wray tunes are personal faves.
the only good thing about this site going down is that I've been able to catch up on all the downloads I've saved up. this one was a treat. especially enjoyed the Jackie Wilson, Eydie Gorme and that incredible 17-20 bit.
