Comment:

Not so much a mix CD as a terrible, if elaborate, literary joke that just happens to take the shape of a mini-CD (the 8cm kind). Well, what can I say - Jean-Yves must have known what he put himself up for when he appointed me as his literary advisor, a position I had certainly never applied for. This is my way of saying, then, that he should read Italo Calvino's "If on a Winter's Night a Traveler" (to make the hint a little more obvious still, I did send him a copy of the book too). He did in the meantime, so, success!

Both the mix itself and the following explanation contain spoilers about the book, so don't read on if you're not up for that. The first and the last song are based on the story which forms the framework of Calvino's book: The Silver Jews song greets the listener in a fairly similar manner as Calvino greets his readers, while the Reinhard Mey song describes the same scene as the last page of the book: two lovers reading in bed. The other songs correspond with the stories that make up the main part of the novel: Each of them shares some sort of theme or setting with the corresponding story in the book, some more tenuously so than others (yes, the Morton Feldman excerpt is an instrumental, and yes, I think it fits the last story in the book perfectly). Just like each story in the book breaks off as it is about to get interesting, these songs also break off somewhere in the middle, making this a very frustrating listening experience indeed.

This is a terrific and excellently realized idea. You're all missing out!

Brilliant. I say, copies of this mix (the Tilbury version is a favorite) and the book (also a favorite) for everyone.

I am a literary dumb-ass, but this looks like quite the fine read.

This mix kick¯ a¯¯. I love mixe¯ based on book¯.

When you say "making this a very frustrating listening experience indeed," is that ofthaltned counter-marketing, or an accurate appraisal?

Well, I suppose that'd largely depend on how you'd feel about the fact that all of these songs break off after a verse or two, Mixxer. But perhaps Jean-Yves is better qualified to answer, as my own archival copy of this refuses to play at all (yes, that's frustrating alright!), so I haven't heard this mix since I made it, which was more than three months ago. In any case, listenability was not the goal here.

Can't say I recognize all the songs, but one of my favorite books of all time, so therefore the mix must be good!

This is very, very, very interesting and well-thought-out.
