Comment:

For a friend who asked for an introduction to Radian after hearing one of their tracks (Vertigo) on one of my mixes. Since I fear that this will be met with some blank stares, it'd probably good to try to explain what they sound like. I'm terrible at doing this kind of thing though, so I'll start by saying what I think that they are not, even if they seem to be labelled as such a lot - that is, post-rock. Well, unless you define post-rock as instrumental music that is mostly concerned with space and texture and that doesn't stick entirely to the traditional rock song format, but doesn't stray from it quite enough to be something else entirely, which I guess is true enough of Radian, for whatever that's worth. They do have the obligatory John McEntire connection, so there's that. One thing they do not have, however, which seems so incredibly popular with most of the stuff labelled as post-rock, is a penchant for that soft-loud-soft-ad nauseam pattern. One thing they do have, which seems so incredibly unpopular with most of the stuff labeled as post-rock, is a sense of focus. Most, so your favourite usually-labelled-as-post-rock band was probably excluded from this sweeping generalisation! But, seriously, Radian have a fucking incredible sense of focus.

Anyway, this mix includes no material from their self-titled debut EP, simply because I've never heard it, but does include a bunch of stuff from various associated projects. I guess it'd be over the top to explain exactly how these relate to each other, so I'll just say that of the three Radian members, John Norman (bass) appears only on the Radian stuff, Stefan NTmeth (synth, computers) can also be heard as part of Lokai and of the Brandlmayr/Dafeldecker/NTmeth/Siewert collaboration, and Martin Brandlmayr (drums, vibraphone, computers) appears on every last one of these tracks, with the exception of the Lokai cut. Arranged by flow, not chronology. If anyone has any desire to hear this, just let me know and I'll send you a link.

never heard of them, alex, but your notes certainly pique my interest -- & isn't that the point of a single artist mix? mission accompished, i'd say...

Do you recommend that we listen to this, or should we wait for post-post-rock?

Well, Ed, you know that I'm all about counter-marketing, don't you? So, don't listen to them, then.
