this is my revision of last year's christmas mix, with intent to ship around to family & friends with (or without) gifts this holiday season. i went through about a dozen different incarnations of this mix, at first feeling really self-conscious & uncomfortable with the fact that it skirted dad-rock territory a little too closely for my taste - a bit too much like something you'd find in the bargain bin at a family-oriented dollar store. after reworking it enough times, no closer to a satisfying final draft, i realized that it wasn't necessarily a bad thing: the conventionality actually works in this case, ringing in a sort of comfort that these standards tend to conjure up. yes, the line-up is entirely predictable; yes, the song choices are safe; yes, quite a few of these cuts are incredibly cheesy; no, there's nothing out of the ordinary here. however, that's sort of what christmas is all about to me, that sense of nostalgia these classics seem to bring out in everyone. not to mention, there's a reason so many of these tunes are holiday standards. is there a better reading of "blue christmas" than elvis presley's? is there a funnier, or more bitingly cynical, christmas song than "father christmas"? has any holiday protest song even come close to "happy xmas (war is over)"? & let's not forget the opener, hands down my all-time favorite christmas song ever. all in all, this may not be the most groundbreaking holiday mix, nor will it house any raging obscurities us music geeks love to savor over (unless you count the ryan adams track as a "rarity," which it sort of is). it's just a wonderfully nostalgic trip down holiday lane with some proven & true standards i never get tired of hearing this time of year. title once again from rufus wainwright. enjoy, everybody! merry christmas & happy holidays!

This is lovely, fantastic, etc., although I would say that, as it looks quite a bit like my Christmas mix from '03: http://www.artofthemix.org/FindAMix/getcontents.asp?strMixID=64320.

Superbly festive. Nothing wrong with holiday Dad-rock.

Who needs a "groundbreaking holiday mix" when a classic like this is available?

Happy Holidays. I'm in no doubt at all that the Darlene Love starter is my favourite Christmas record of them all. It sends shivvers up my spine. And always reminds me of 'Gremlins'!. Love the closer as well of course.. Is track 8 the same song as the Mariah one?

I've got to be honesty, I hate these Christmas themed mixes. But, I've got to say you've picked a lot of great artists for a Christmas themed mix to not make me totally cringe. Congrats!

I have to second Salman here on both counts here. I'll say that I'd be happy to give this one a listen in July or thereabouts, though!

Simply a wonderful Christmas mix! Only a Scrooge would hate it.

Quintessential, to say the least. Not every mix needs them raging obscurities. This should be sold in stores. Bless your Christmas spirit, lombardi :)

Great collection. Merry Christmas.

Cool mix. That Vince Guaraldi record always gets me. I didn't think this was so very akin to Rob's ghost of Xmas past, 'til I saw the Tom Waits track. It really is uncanny how similar your taste is, especially in the romantic department! Happy Holidays!

Oh I love "All I Want for Christmas is You"! This is a wonderful family mix. Happy Holidays.

I'd put the Pogues in the driving seat with Darlene adopting a very close shotgun role. A little to sugary for me Ant but from you it makes sense. Thats a compliment by the way as back handed as it sounds. Buon Natale!

Complete opposite to what I've been listening to, of late. In that, these are quality items.
