Comment:
A compilation of tracks recorded by people who at one time or another hosted a game show on American TV. An absurd concept, I admit, but there are several tracks here that must be heard to be believed. Download
Only a few of these would be primarily identified as "game show hosts": Wink Martindale, Peter Marshall, Bert Convy, Chuck Woolery, and perhaps Richard Dawson, but even though he was such a fixture on Family Feud, I still see him as Newkirk from Hogan's Heroes. Most people would probably identify Merv Griffin, Regis Philbin and Steve Allen as "talk show hosts" but they were all involved with game shows, particularly Merv Griffin. And then there are the comedians who dabbled in game shows: Bill Cosby, Jeff Foxworthy and Drew Carey, though game shows have become much more central to Drew Carey's career of late. You could also put Paul Ruebens, Vicki Lawrence and Jackie Gleason into this category, but game shows were much less significant in their careers. In fact, Jackie Gleason's career as a game show host lasted only one episode. During what was supposed to be the second episode of You're in the Picture, Jackie Gleason apologized for the first episode and changed the format of the show to a talk show. Donny Osmond and William Shatner also briefly hosted game shows, but few would identify them as game show hosts. For a list of game shows hosted, see the Wikipedia.
The music runs the range from Donny Osmond's teen-idol pop to jazz (Steve Allen, Jackie Gleason) to novelty songs (Merv Griffin, Pee-Wee Herman, and a Jeff Foxworthy's "you might be a redneck" stand-up comedy with a musical backing) with plenty of vocal pop and Broadway standards thrown in. Some of the tracks are just plain overwrought, not to mention bizarre. I'd be hard pressed to choose the greatest overactor between Wink Martindale's plea for organ donation, Richard Dawson's defense of World War II, and William Shatner's over-the-top Bob Dylan cover.
There are a few tracks that I would have liked to include but couldn't find. If anyone has any of the following albums (or even individual tracks from them) please contact me:
- Chuck Barris & the Hollywood Cowboys - Confessions of a Dangerous Singer (2003)
- Betty White - Day at Aqa (1995)
- Danny Bonaduce - Danny Bonaduce (1973)
- Bob Eubanks - singles "Smoke, Smoke, Smoke That Cigarette" and "Heaven of the Stars", both from the early 1960s
Feedback:
the fine line between genius and insanity - my personal motw!
I'm pretty much with toxotronic. This is really something. (Btw, happy new year to you, my friend.)
The Cosby looks insane, great job and I hope you find that Eubanks track.
Nice theme and execution as always.
Just plain awesome...fantastic job!
Oh my gosh. twitch twitch I can't believe there's this much awesomeness in the world!
He posted the coolest mix on the Art of the Mix website during the final week of 2007. bzzzzt! What is Dead Man? Correct. I'll take 'Mix Tapes-A-Go-Go' for $600 please. Excitement, Elation, Jubilation and Anticipation. bzzzzt! What did tornadoZ feel upon seeing Dead Man's latest mix? Correct for $600. I'll take 'Eight-Legged Animals' for $200 please....
Such a creative idea, I absolutely love it.
if this isn't one of the most interesting, intriguing & altogether enticing mixes i've seen on this site, then i dunno what is - i'm ready for it!
Truly an original and clever mix, Dead Man.
Speaking of track 13, I just got an internet pass-along that contains the following repartée:
Peter Marshall: Why do Hell's Angels wear leather?
Paul Lynde: Because chiffon wrinkles too easily.
Nicely done, not sure I could stomach listening to this though!
Ahh, just the fact that this playlist now exists in the world makes my gameshow lovin' heart beam! Crazy idea, wonderfully done.
What a fun mix, and so smart. Bing Cosby's Beatles cover is nice. Happy New Year!
Hilarious, brilliant and inspiring! Caught a recent re-run of Password! with Bert Convy. Elizabeth Montgomery had the word "rooster" and, of course, turned her young, poofed blonde game partner, stared dramatically into her eyes and said "cock"...The young blonde looked terrified and sat motionless until the buzzer went off. Ms. Montgomery, seemingly flabbergasted, peered at her partner and said, "You couldn't think of a SINGLE word from THAT clue?" It was truly a great moment in game show television. In any event, thanks tons for this GREAT mix!
CONGRATULATIONS! YOUR MIX WINS THE GRAND PRIZE!
(Crap, my html skills suck. What happened to the italic and blinking text?)
I'd like to kick ass mixes for $1000. The answer would be ..............(unnecessary delay for added suspense)...... THIS MIX. ****Ding Ding Ding**** Granted not in the form of a question, but hey, I'm too excited.
just marvelous and nearly as good as Stippenquop's "Get Shorty" mix.
I'll take "absurd mix comcepts" for $500, Alex. A winning mix, Dead Man. The rest of us will get the consolation prizes. You've dug up some obscurites and great job as always with the liner notes. You should win mix of the week -- and a one week vacation to Alcapuco. Another possibility is John Davidson ($10,000 Pyramid, Hollywood Squares), though he's a bit square himself.
No prize for my spelling on that last comment! (Acapulco, concepts, obscurities). BTW, I can hook you up with a Danny Bonaduce track if you still need one.
absolutely brilliant ! Love it.
Sounds interesting and am envious of the idea. Not being American I can't really appreciate your effort but MOTW seems a fitting reward.
Nice concept! Merv Griffin also "wrote" the Jeopardy! theme which is, by the way, just "My Little Teapot"Great mix!!!
This mix is a hoot! That's my final answer.
finally back in the office this week, and we had lots of fun listening to this, thanks for sharing it. favorites are "Fly With Me," the transition from "Redneck Stomp" into Jackie Gleason... and please, give my ears to someone who can't hear that Wink Martindale song. happy new year.
