After a couple high-effort mixes, time to kick back with a few low-effort single artist mixes. I've always been a bit more partial towards Paul's first solo decade than John's, though both had a handful of highs and a surprising amount (in light of what they'd accomplished together in the 60's) of sheer mediocrity. In Lennon's case, I think the Plastic Ono album remains a solid classic, and Imagine is pretty respectable, but beyond that he was largely a singles act. Which is why this finished product doesn't look radically different from the dozens of commercial greatest-hits anthologies on the market, though with enough personal variation to make it worth the effort. (For validation, I compared it to king-of-the-single-artist-mixes Rob Conroy's Lennon mix and found we'd ended up with a fair amount of overlap, so I'm concluding I got this one just about right.)

fairly great compilation of my all-time favorite musical figure - it's an absolute crime to omit "jealous guy," one of the most beautiful, piercing ballads these ears have ever heard, but aside from that you hit most of my favorites. "mind games" & "#9 dream" are largely unappreciated cuts (by the general public, anyhow), & glad to see "cold turkey" made it. i would have made room for "nobody loves you when you're down & out," as well, but that's about as far as i'll go. good stuff, marc.

I was never one for pop idolotry, but the Beatles and particularly Lennon are my exception. What would I like to see included? I agree with Anthony that Jealous Guy is a must have, as us Luck of the Irish. I have always liked Well, Well, Well and, again as Anthony says, Nobody Loves You When You're Down & Out. What would I cut to get those in? #9 Dream has never been near the top of my list. And for a personal listen I wouldn't miss Whatever Gets You Thru the Night, but no self-respecting anthology could omit that. So nit-picking aside, I think this is about as close to a perfect selection as possible in 20 songs.

i would have no problem with getting rid of Whatever Gets You Thru the Night but otherwise no complaints. my next mix will contain a cover of working class hero that is amazing. guesses accepted.

I dunno, Marc, I think I would have gone for 2 CDs just to flesh it out a bit. As you noted, it looks quite a bit like the Shaved Fish anthology, though I am glad to see a couple oddities. The last two are hits, but just remarkable and among my favorite ex-Beatles songs, period.

Nice collection. Can't go wrong with any of this stuff.

I'm with you on your solo Lennon assessment 100% and with you on most of these tracks--you're right, I think we have more overlap here than on any other single-artist mix! I'm not very partial to "Power to the People" or "Woman is the...", but I love the couple of other tracks that you included that weren't on my mix.

If the guy only ever wrote "isolation", he'd still be a friggin genius in my book.

I reckon you 98% nailed it . . . wouldn't jealous guy squeeze on any where ? cut down the gaps between tracks ? Make it an MP3 playlist and not tell anyone ? Nice work, and I really like the detail in the cover pic . . .
