Comment:

1979, punk was mutating, disco was dominant and the odd old dinosaur was still releasing relevant records, witness Neil Young's Rust Never Sleeps. Joy Division, my favourite band at the time, released their exceptional first LP. I liked it so much I bought the tee shirt. It doesn't fit me anymore. The Jam, Wire, Specials, Gang Of Four, XTC, Elvis Costello, Talking Heads, Chic and the Clash all released essential LP's. And the supremely talented Kirsty MacColl was embarking on her solo career.

Ah! 1979! I was living in New Orleans, partying hearty. The tunes of Joe Jackson, Wreckless Eric, Ian Dury, The Pretenders, Judie Tzuke, and the artists you included here. Saw Talking Heads in concert at The Warehouse. Still have pink and black "sunglasses" from the last tour of The Fabulous Poodles. Thanks for unearthing some more happy memories.

Neil Young, Talking Heads, Joy Division & Costello, see, we're not that very far apart. Great overview and fantastic cover.

A varied but concise time capsule. Looks great, and, yeah, love the cover too.

So many incredible tracks here I don't know where to begin. Glad to see some Disco Classics here to mix it up nicely. I don't know the opener on this mix, but I bloody love the closer..

Love these biographical snapshot mixes of a particular time and place. There's a lot here that I too was into at the time. Particularly 2,3,8,10,11,14,15,17,19-23.

Great year, great mix. A "real-life" (non-AotM) friend of mine did a double-disc monster of a mix summarizing this year and it was *still* fantastic (even with the second disc). My favorites are the Go4, Joy Division, Wire, T. Heads, Jam, Elvis C., Neil, Squeeze and Split Enz tracks.

one of my favorite years, music-wise, & you've done quite an excellent job capturing exactly why - the jam, gang of four, squeeze, elvis costello, talking heads, wire, joy division & neil young hit me the most - good stuff

When I think of 1979, I think of my sister (the year she was born), and that Smashing Pumpkins song of the same year! Now I won't have to with the cast of characters in this mix. Shake down 1979!

XTC was one of my favorites at the time, and they still are for that matter.

Just one question:How come whenever a new Joy Division best-of/greatest-hits collection is released, they never EVER include the almighty Interzone?!?!? I mean, what gives??

Love that Anita Ward track. And the Elvis Costello. I wish my mom had listened to this stuff while rocking me as a newborn.
