The Blues Foundation is dedicated to preserving blues history, celebrating blues excellence, and supporting blues education. The Memphis, Tennessee based organization produces the annual W.C. Handy Blues Awards along with the BluesFest Weekend. For more information on this wonderful foundation call (800) 861-8795 or visit their website.

For someone whose earliest musical tastes were heavily influenced by the blues, this is an important resource. I decided to put together this mix as a tribute to the fine work they do, especially when it comes to bringing the early recordings of the older legendary players to light.

There is a common thread running through this compilation in that I attended live performances by each of the musicians while living in Massachusetts. Most were seen at the Iron Horse Club in Northampton, Mass, one of the best listening rooms in the country. A few - such as The Allmans and Bluesbreakers - played larger venues. Just putting together the songs on this mix brought back so many memories. For instance, I had never heard of Big Twist before catching his act and was absolutely wowed by the energy and chops of his band. Jazz artists Benson and Cole are on here because they play a lot of blues in their shows. Cray was seen three times and then again last year in D.C. Of the modern players, he stands very tall.
My own indoctrination into blues playing came as a 21-year-old in a local pub band called The Johnny Walker Blues Band. I'll leave it to your imagination where the inspiration came from for the band.
Got the blues? You bet I do. I got it bad and that's good.
I've got two extra copies to give away, but please answer only one of the quizzes.
Quiz #1: Johnny Copeland was known as "Clyde." Where did he get that nickname?
Quiz #1: Which musician is part of the Prairie Home Companion house band?

Thanks, Dean, for relieving my anxiety about a couple of your past quizzes. I am green with envy over some of the acts you've seen, and pink with shame over lurking without posting. Heck, I guess I've already got the blues. But... Pat Donohue is the guitarist for Guy's All-Star Shoe Band, so does that mean I also get the blues?

Hah! I played the Iron Horse a couple of times in the late '80s, early 90's! Great room. I've also seen 1,8,10,14,15 and 17 live .... parallel lives, eh. Nice job.

Got a wonderful gift in the mail on Friday! Gorgeous package, Dean, and some great stuff inside, too. The 1-2 and 4-5 combinations are wonderful. The 5/4-time Benson felt out of place until I heard the Richie Cole chaser. The guitar player on #12 was pretty good, too. Thanks again.
