Comment:

for the first time in nearly a week, i wasn't attacked by a trojan as i ventured on the site, so i'm taking this opportunity to throw up a quickie (if you call four hours "quick," which i do).

as i've mentioned numerous times in the past, i'm not usually very into single artist mixes - unless i'm making an introduction to said artist for an aquaintance, i'm always going to prefer grabbing the original albums, as they're more pleasurable as cohesive artistic statements. although i do agree with the distinction rob & marc have made countless times, that a single artist mix for someone you're not crazy about but like quite a few of their tunes is boundlessly more useful, as it affords you the opportunity of a consistently pleasurable listen without the duds you're less bound to reach for when you wanna spin their records.

johnny cash is a totally different scenario in this case: he's one of my 20 or so all-time favorite artists, & one of the primary musicians responsible for forming my obsession with pop music during my formative years, so i'm far from ambivalent in my appreciation for his catalog. that being said, he was never much of an album-oriented artist, & the compilations on the market of his are inclined to omit quite a few of my favorite tunes of his. i've been on quite a cash kick lately, so i took it upon myself to cull together my favorite work of his to concoct what i feel is pretty close to my absolute favorite johnny cash songs.

this starts off following a rough chronological flow, with his big-hitters at sun kicking things off, yet as i went on i took the liberty of reworking a flow that was more akin to what i was in the mood for, & voila, here's my single disc interpretation of the man in black's best work. there were tons of cuts, the most painful being "there you go," "any old wind that blows," "don't take your guns to town," "a boy named sue," "luther played the boogie," "ballad of a teenage queen," "home of the blues," "keep on the sunny side" (with the carter family), "it takes one to know me" (with june carter), among a myriad of others.

that's pretty much it. i'm pretty sure mr. cash's catalog is by all means ubiquitous by now, however, if anyone is yearning for an upload, i'll get it up ASAP.

Obviously, single-artists of an artist like the voice of God Himself are entirely subjective. Jackson and I Still Miss Someone are my favorites here, but I have the feeling my list might only share 30%. Stay tuned for a forthcoming Gutbucket edition.

Very nice. I did one of these six years ago and there is obviously some overlap between the two, but you really put a unique and personal spin on the Man in Black here. You did include "Cocaine Blues," "I Still Miss Someone," and "Jackson," so I would never complain about the inclusion of any other Cash tracks. :-)

Oh man, Anthony, this is beautiful! I adore Johnny Cash myself (I grew up with him, my mom was a HUGE fan), and never get tired of listening to that voice of his. In fact, I was just listening to him as Homer's spirit guide on the "Guatemalan Insanity Pepper" episode of the Simpsons the other night!

Brilliantly assembled Ant. He was more of a king to me than Presley.

Nicely done. A single artist mix, with certain artists anyway, is a near impossiblity, often requireing multiple discs. I think you did a fine job, here with the other JC.

I lost a Johnny Cash Box Set in my recent flood. The Cds still play, but the lovely booklets with all the great pics were ruined. Gutted. A truly great man and a wonderful mix..
