Comment:
When I was much, much younger, about the time Live Bullet made the national c harts, it was common to hear the following exchange:"Bob Seger played my high school prom.""Bob Seger played everbody's prom."Local boy makes good: starting in Ann Arbor, recording and playing, never stopping, Bob made a name for himself throughout southern Michigan. For a couple of elpees (Noah and Brand New Morning), he tried to go all psychedelic, thinking that if he played hard enough, he could be the next Jimi. (This, mind you, he admitted in an interview... glad he got over it...). You will notice, please, no cuts from either elpee on this mix. There is a perfectly good reason... they suck, and don't have a decent cut on them.Bob is at his best doing slopbucket r'n'b straight up rock, and can drag some interesting life into the odd cover (Smokin' O.P.'s is a cover elpee.)You will also notice the missing Rock and Roll Never Forgets and Old Time Rock and Roll, because I really never ever have to hear either of them ever again.Ever.Thank you.Beautiful Loser is one of the single most neglected elpees ever recorded, IMHO.
Feedback:
Didn't know Bob was rockin' all the proms in Michigan. Nice liner notes.
I've never listened much to Bob, largely because that fistful of massive-selling songs from the mid-70s (presumably on the albums you reference) made him such an omnipresent fm-radio presence in my childhood that I could never bear to hear him again. (Though I always thought "Night Moves" was a cool song, but this may owe to its excellent use in the animated American Pop movie.) Still, a significant number of rock musicians and critics, some of whom I hold in high esteem, swear by his early work as truly legen dary. So maybe I should give it another shot.
I saw Seger and band two years ago after the release of his latest LP. It was like huge prom.
