Comment:

A two-disc "best of the rest", custom-compiled to introduce a frie nd to some Dylan he hasn't heard before. He already has a solid set of Bob Dylan records: all the albums released during the sixties, plus New Morning, Blood on the Tracks, and Desire from the seventies, and from the Indian Summer, Time Out of Mind, Love and Theft and Modern Times. This set is limited to songs that aren't on those records. His favorite Dylan album is Blood On the Tracks and mine is John Wesley Harding, which may help explain the contours of this comp.

I couldn't help Disc Two e nding up almost a "Best of The Bootleg Series vols. 1-3", because so much is so good. On the other hand, I couldn't see fit to include anything from Saved!, Shot Of Love, Knocked Out Loaded, MTV Unplugged, Oh Mercy or even Good As I Been To You (a favorite), though for some of these, Bootleg Series al ternate cuts are here instead. Also out of the running is all the stuff I don't have: Hard Rain, At Budokan, No Direction Home and others.

I feel funny about leaving out "Farewell, Angelina", but after trying to find a place for it here I realized I'm not that wild about this song (plods, images too arbitrary), and I prefer Joan Baez singing it.

I've been listening a lot to the new and momentous Bootleg Series vol. 8: Tell Tale Signs. Much greatness, and "Cross the Green Mountain" and "Red River Shore" in particular strike me as downright giants: deep, expansive, full of honed detail, world-creating epics you can really inhabit.

For some other Dylan mix: all the full-on Gospel rockers from Saved!, which I love but they didn't fit in here.

"He can ride down Niagara Falls in the barrels of your skull" is from "Man of Peace", which is on Infidels.

This is my kind of Dylan mix. I have only attempted it once before. So many of my favorites here, though I do also like the highlights from the albums you left out.

There's always room for another best of whatever when it comes to Dylan. Good job!
