Goddamn Draculas
Jenny
(2014)
There's a healthy amount of Boston music here - a lot of the new music I discovered this year was due to going to shows. This particular band I discovered during the Rock N' Roll Rumble, a local Battle Of The Bands, and they also opened up for Cheap Trick later that year. http://goddamndraculas.bandcamp.com/
Jack White
Three Women
from Lazaretto (2014)
Petty Morals
Radio Action
from Lemonade EP (2014)
Another Rock N' Roll Rumble band. http://pettymorals.bandcamp.com/
The Appreciation Post
Quick, Brain
from Slip Away (2014)
Full disclosure: A member of this band is also my friend/occasional guitarist for my own band. http://theappreciationpost.bandcamp.com/
Self
Runaway
from Super Fake Nice (2014)
I kind of hoped for a full album, but I was just excited in general for any new Self material.
Redbone
Come And Get Your Love
from Awesome Mix Vol. 1: Guardians Of The Galaxy Original Soundtrack (2014)
Just a really good, fun soundtrack - 70's Top 40 meshing surprisingly well with a futuristic action/sci-fi setting.
Dexys Midnight Runners
Geno
from Searching For The Young Soul Rebels (1980)
This was a particularly unlikely thrift store cd find, and one of my favorite older albums I first heard this year.
The Black Keys
Fever
from Turn Blue (2014)
Party Bois
In Your Head
(2014)
A new Boston band, who I first became aware of because their lineup includes the former vocalist of hard rock band Mellow Bravo - Party Bois are more of a retro new wave/dance group, but he still uses the same gritty vocal style, so the contrast is interesting. http://partybois.bandcamp.com/
Lindsey Stirling
Roundtable Rival
from Shatter Me (2014)
I ended up discovering Lindsey Stirling just a little before the new album.
Run The Jewels
Close Your Eyes (And Count To Fuck)
from Run The Jewels 2 (2014)
Endation
Staab
from The Absence Of Everything (2012)
A pretty intense live band. Because I knew the directors, I ended up being an extra in this song's video. http://endation.bandcamp.com/
Masked Intruder
Stick 'Em Up
from Masked Intruder (2012)
One of the most fun shows I've been to all year. Among the merch was a t-shirt with the full chorus of this song on the back - it's not exactly something you can wear in most public settings.
Classic Ruins
Room Starts Spinning
from Lassie Eats Chickens (1986)
A classic 80's Boston garage rock band, who I got to see at a benefit show. I mainly knew "1 + 1 < 2", which was featured on the compilation D.I.Y.: Mass Ave, but I picked up the album at their merch table.
The McKinleys
Sweet And Tender Romance
(1964)
A surprisingly rockin' 60's girl group song... With a guitar solo by a then-unknown Jimmy Page.
"Weird Al" Yankovic
First World Problems
from Mandatory Fun (2014)
Come on, it's a Weird Al style parody of Pixies, what's not to like?
Curtis Mayfield
Move On Up
from Curtis: The Very Best Of Curtis Mayfield (1970)
Another thrift store find, and I've had a gradually increasing interest in funk and soul in general.
Cheap Trick
Auf Weidersehen
from Heaven Tonight (1978)
I saw them live this year, and this was one of the highlights of their set.
Tigerman Woah!
Guess So - Take Me Home
from Up South Vol. II (2013)
Closing it out with some more local music. http://tigermanmusic.bandcamp.com/
Comment:
At a certain point, my year end mixes started being less about things that actually came out that year and more "autobiographical" - thus, this is mostly music that actually came out in 2014, with a few tracks that were new discoveries for me or else are going to be tied to the year in my mind. Album I discovered just a little too late to include anything from: Taiga by Zola Jesus.
