a much-needed mix of sunny stuff from warmer places. as we slide further into fall and winter, i can tell i'm going to be listening to this a lot. originally put together to sorta catch a friend up on what i was exploring, with the actual, more sinister motive being to get him more familiar with toots hibbert without his being too aware of it (long story). anyway, it seems to flow pretty well, except for a rough transition from the dj pica track into clara nunes. the dj pica is from this really cool and eclectic continuous mix that was too hard to find a good break in (without actually blending tracks myself). dj pica is actually yamantaka eye of the boredoms, and the track included is one of the most amazing multi-percussion tracks i've ever heard. makes me wanna break out in a cold sweat! the bpms were tough to bridge, though. i'm also convinced that the first sergio mendes song can't possibly be sergio mendes - got it off napster a long time ago, so who knows what it really is. most compelling song on here has to be tom ze's "doi." ah, great great fucking great song! overall, pretty traditional material that serves as a nice intro to stuff i don't know much about (gal costa track towards the end added 1/20 to replace a nuyorican number that's fun, but the english lyrics distracted a bit).

this looks fabulous. lots of stuff i don't know, but with the guiding light of jorge ben, gilberto gil et al, plus one of those eye remixes, i'm more than intriuged.

Looks nice. I don't know most of the songs, but if they go with Toots they must be good.

Great title. Great mix.

i *love* portuguese music...but i can't believe you left off "aguas de marco" or even the original "girl from ipanema"!

and you might like "baby" by portastatic...not really the same as joao gilberto...but a cute song about a portuguese language barrier.

Cool mix.

yeah, no ipanema, no aguas. what can i say? i originally wanted to focus on the funk/soul aspects of brazilian music, so some otherwise well-known or good songs were sidelined. i guess that means i passed over a lot of bossa nova-ish stuff for things that came out in the late sixties or seventies or were more of the mpb thing. i also avoided some of the more "experimental" stuff by tom ze that i absolutely love, and passed over caetano veloso because i couldn't find a good place for him.... and speaking of caetano veloso, is the "baby" song you're talking about the same tune that he wrote and performed with gal costa on the "tropicalia" album and later covered by os mutantes?

Awesome mix! I've never wanted to dance so much. This hasn't left my CD player since I got it.

This sounded more amazing than I imagined from reading about it, which already had me salivating. At the risk of starting a war ala "DMB versus ska", "Girl from Ipanema" is the most well-known example of exotica in the history of the universe, and deservedly so... who could resist the charm of Astrud singing English phonetically? However, since it is etched into everyone's grey matter a thousand times over already, I am glad that you opted for other songs!
