Comment:

I was downloading two songs and then realized they were similar, started looking for the theme and if it was a branch of music. Then Lo I stumbled into the subgenre of American Murder Ballads. No morals, No Heros, Just the morbid romance of a man and a woman, one murdering the other.

I changed the name. I meant to do it before hand, I was going to origianlly name it just Murder Ballads, but there is a Nick Cave album of the same name. So I put american in front. When not all are american bands and some aren't even american songs. The only one I will debate is that Rocky Racoon is an American Murder Ballad, even if done by the Beatles. Thanks for all the comments guys.

Nick Cave/PJ Harvey do a really excellent murder ballad (henry lee) that would go really well on here. And yeah, the beatles one is kind of pushing it, but it's such a great song! (and holy shit that's my favorite tom waits song ever. really.) Kick ass.

I dig the cover art big time, and I won't bitch about the title, and I will agree that the Beatles tune is definitely in the murder ballad tradition, even if no one is actually murdered (and, to be fair, Rocky was only gonna kneecap Dan), but I will *insist* that this mix is incomplete without some version of Stagger Lee. It is *the* consumate American Murder Ballad. Spectacular choices all the rest, though!

i agree that the mix is rather good, although i cannot understand why "The Country Death Song" would be palced upon it, instead of "The Ballad of Hollis Brown". The Voilent Femmes totally ripped it off of Dylan, and the song itself is totally inferior to its Dylan counterpart.

"Country Death Song" is great, so Mr. Dibbick can just get off yr jock.

How about "The Road Goes On Forever" by Robert Earl Keen or Joe Ely. I reccomend it.

While I do find this hilarious and unique and inspired, I also find it slightly disturbing... :)

awesome mix. real high concept... and love the cover art... i agree with the guy that says that "rocky racoon" isn't a murder ballad, since no one gets killed in it... "maxwell silver hammer" will do the trick, though

Love the idea, I would probably throw Eminem's Kim and G n' R's Used To Love Her, but cool anyway.

thought of one last one that might be relevant. Mack the Knife, while not wuite a classic murder ballad, it is about a murderer.

for everyone that reads this, I am unfortunately unable to make copies of this music as I do not have CD burner anymore. All the MP3's are available at once place or another if you know where to look. Is more a matter of needing to know the names of the songs, which i graciously provide for you

Maybe you didn't know this: the words on the bumpersticker are Dutch and they say: "bring me back alive!"
Really funny to discover for me, since i'm from the Netherlands.

Awesome. I suppose the most famous American murder ballad is "Tom Dooley". Too overplayed to include in this great mix!
