Comment:

Signed to Sub Pop in 2000, Rosie Thomas joined the singer-songwriter circuit from Detroit via Seattle, and debuted in 2001 with When We Were Small, a fine introduction to an artist who peppers her intimate, gently constructed tunes ("Farewell", "Bicycle Tricycle") with snippets of sideways humour — turns out she does standup comedy on the side, under the alter ego Sheila Saputo, and it came as no surprise when she titled her 2003 follow-up Only with Laughter Can You Win. Here, among the brightest spots from Thomas' four albums to date, we've included a cover of "Let It Be Me" with Ed Harcourt, and a masterful, unhurried rendition of R.E.M.'s "The One I Love": by recasting the rock classic in delicate acoustic lace, she does for it what Ryan Adams did for Oasis' "Wonderwall".
