Comment:

A new series devoted to my favorite moments of guitar history, underappreciated or otherwise. My love affair with the 12-string Rickenbacker began in the early 80s. That's when I first *really* listened to the Byrds and Beatles and wondered how they got those great chimey guitar sounds. Well my little friends, the 12-string Rickenbacker is largely to blame. I bought my first Rick from a good friend. It was one beautiful guitar, but the sound was never quite what I expected. That is, not until I scored a Vox amp a few years later and made some good use of that Rick-o-sound (that is, using the stereo pickup effect). Sadly, few people sound like Roger McGuinn and I was no exception - that treble boost that he used was integral to the sound of those Byrds records, you know. In any event, I eventually discovered Gretsch guitars and found myself playing the Rick less and less - unfortunately, the necks on most Rickenbackers are notoriously skinny and I have enormous clumsy paws. So, I traded it (against my better judgment). Anyhow, for years after that I wanted another electric 12 string but the Rick's were too costly and unfriendly to play. Then one day I stumbled onto a late-60s Gretsch 12 string electric, and the riff to "She don't care about time" sounded stellar. Man, that guitar could chime! The rest is history. I still love the 12-string sound, but with the playability of a Gretsch. So what is this particular mix all aboot? It's a tribute to the mighty 12-string electric sound, as largely played through Rickenbackers. To be fair, you might find a Vox Phantom 12 or Gretsch 12 string buried in here, but certainly no cursed double-neck Gibsons. I threw in a song I played on - please indulge me. Any other fave electric 12-string tracks out there? Couldn't find a copy of Paul Revere's "Kicks", which I swear starts with a Rick-riff.

I loved 12-string Ricks so much that I once considered buying one ... which lasted until I realized that I couldn't tune the damn thing. The 12-string remains unbought. You might consider tossing in a band like Ride - I believe they used a 12-string Rick or two. I know they played 6-string Ricks a lot.

On a scale of 1 to 10, I'll give this a 12. Would love to hear it one day.

I'm not much of a guitar player myself, but have to agree this is a killer mix.

A truly faultless mix, Sean. A brilliant idea to boot. Have a great new year and keep churning out the essential mixes, my friend! Like all of this but especially digging the Divers and Choir pix.

how about just two guitars played at once, would that count

It would only count if the two guitars played at once were played by the same person - ideally, someone with four arms. Thanks for the good words, kids. Just added a Hollies track to the mix. Don't know how I overlooked them earlier. You're right about the Church, Jim. Sadly, I once dated a rabid Church fan and that band has some bad connotations for me.
