Gospel music. The high lonesome wail and the sacred steel.

This looks really fucking cool. In general things that come from the church don't get much in the way of praise from me, but good church music with a slightly eerie edge to it is just captivating. That Sacred Steel comp hooked me on the first listen. Like my blues, I like my gospel when it sounds fifty years old and only has at most a few musicians - and preferably only one singer. In college I was a night janitor for a while and at the end of our shift I'd sit with my boss and drink coffee and listen to a country (and some blues and folk) gospel show on an AM station from Kentucky hosted by a guy that had to be 100 years old and everything he played was off of 78s, 45s, and reel to reels he recorded himself. I wish I had a few tapes of those show now, or at least appreciated a bit more when I heard them. Back then I appreciated the sounds, but I could only listen to the praise for so long before getting my fill. -Dale

Outstanding. I got to see the Campbell Brothers perform once and they were great. I love that sacred steel...

I have no religious beliefs myself, but there is something compelling about certain gospel music. I guess it may be because the folks singing really believe in what they are doing, whether anyone else does or not is irrelevant. Great stuff, George.

I should add that despite being raised Catholic and currently working at a Jesuit college I have no religious affilation whatsoever. I've always loved Gregorian chants and Eastern Orthodox choral music and lived for many years across the street from an African-American church that filled the neighborhood with gospel music several times a week. It was much later that I started listening to country/folk gospel and just recently discovered the sacred steel music of the Church of God. Very intense stuff.

Beautiful collection - even given my lack of religiosity. See, even the heretics can appreciate music of praise.

Lovely music. But, tbh, I always thought Lucinda Williams was being less than straight-faced in "Getting Right With God". Indeed I always found it a little deity-critical. But that might just be me :)

This is absolutely beautiful and really appeals to me - I am religious (Catholic, guilty as charged :) ) but even if I weren't, I'm sure that the I'd appreciate the sacred feel of it. I love Freakwater and it's lovely to see Iris DeMent there too. I don't really know much of sacred steel music but will definitely check it out. Excellent work brother!

I have to admit that I approached this with some trepidation, but it looks really good. George Harrison might have flowed well on this . . .

Really great stuff George. Lotsa favorites. Soothes the soul of this avowed atheist. Admittedly, an atheist with a sweet tooth, er, uhm, ear for devotional music.
