Comment:

Roy Hall was the composer of "Whole Lotta Shakin' Going On". He was a guitarist and a Restaurant owner as well. Many artists starting, their careers, played at Hall's Restaurant. One of them was Jerry Lee Lewis. OK; Art Garfunkel got a big hit with "Bright Eyes". But the hit was a later recording with a totally different arrangement and elaborated lyrics. The version here is the original soundtrack version from the movie Watership Down. Also, Gale Storms versio of "I Hear You Knocking" is not an original. But it's so awful I just HAD to put it in.

Nice mix and interesting theme. Re "Rose Garden": I find it hard to choose between Billy Joe Royal's version and the writer, Joe South's, version. (Both "georgiaboys" like me!) Either beats the Lynne Anderson version, although the public must not've thought so.

A fascinating series. Sometimes you wonder why the original wan't the hit, sometimes it's evident. Sometimes, as you note, it's even debatable which version is the original. But the main thing is that almost all your picks on all four of these volumes are occasions for that kind wonder and/or debate. There's a lot on these four that I'd like to listen to, so if you can find four of mine you'd like to trade for, just let me know.

Great set of disks & notes. Well worth the effort it must've taken to put together. Nice work!
