Comment:

There's a special curse to releasing a flawless debut lp. Truth is, Marshall Crenshaw has made a string of great pop records. Though occasionally hampered by heavy production (especially the late 80s discs), MC never fails to deliver brilliant pop hooks, beautifully sung and punctuated by stunning guitar work. This is my tribute to the chronically underappreciated Marshall Crenshaw, former Beatlemania "John", pop genius, guitar hero, rock historian and occasional Buddy Holly stand-in. Many tracks were omitted - I barely scratched the surface of MC's 90s (and later) output. For my friend, Brian, with whom I saw a truly memorable Crensh show in '84.

I know little of this artist, Sean, but I'd love to get a copy of this in our next trade, my friend.

You already know that I want one of these, as I haven't really ventured beyond his first album.

This is a great collection. I love Crenshaw and have most of his CDs. Saw him a few times in the early to mid 80s in clubs. Great performer too. That first album is an all-time classic.

A sad-but-true assessment of the Crenshaw oeuvre. (I think "Whenever You're On My Mind" is among the all-time Top 20 best love songs ever written. I care.)

His first album is great but I must admit that it was Field Day that I played to death. Great collection, Sean. Really well done.

Count me in with the rest of the "liked the first lp but never felt inspired to keep up with him" camp. Guess I need to dig deeper.

Count me in with Gerry. I don't know much MC, but if you dig it Sean, chances are it's right up my alley. Please put one aside for our next trade.

Having now listened to my copy of this (thanks, Sean), I can comfortably say this is one of those mixes that makes me want to run out and buy all the original albums. (And I noticed that they're being reissued as we speak.) Great stuff all around. Though I also agree that the production is a real shame; had he received more of a clean, straightforward mix -- like, say, Elvis Costello's early albums -- instead of a badly dated reverb-drenched 80's sound, the music would hold up much better. It'd be great if someone unearthed the demos for all these.
