Comment:
A friend declared yesterday that she had 'gone off music'. She was worried, saying she didn't like her previous favourites in rock/jazz/whatever. So I decided to make her a cd featuring lots of stuff she's never heard. Tried to fit as many moods and sounds into this as possible, without really sacrificing feeling for genre-bending. Quite like the subtle shifting of 1-5, all based around singy pop songs, but with the variation between folk, scott walker pop, dance and prog etc. It's all like that really. Or at least I went for it. There's a good hour of out-takes that I scrapped for sake of being more song-oriented/unified (no Broken Social Scene/Do Make Say Think/Shining/long Miles Davis/Zappa jams), and less random (ie Architecture in Helsinki, Polyphonic Spree), and more up to date (ie no Stones/Big Star/Cars/Marley/Small Faces/Slits etc)... I also tended to try to fit as many female-vocalled songs into the mix, because she's a singer herself and I don't know, an album full of male singers wouldn't go down as well I guess. Wasn't that much of a problem anyway, because before I knew it I had a about half the album that way inclined anyway. We'll see what she thinks.
