Comment:

Just about everyone my age has had a Talking Heads phase. Mine lasted about 5 minutes in college and I haven't thought about them much since then. Recently, I was going through their old catalog trying to remember what I liked about them. This about sums it up. The original version of this was in two discs, but I prefer to keep my single artist mixes to one disc. I'd say that just about all of their discs through "Little Creatures" hold up pretty well, though I love the first 3 most of all.

I must admit I was never into them as a phase but I do like a lot of their stuff.

Nobody could wear an ill-fitting suit better than David Byrne! I also liked what little I knew of The Tom Tom Club back in the day.

I've been going through a huge Heads phase myself, if a cursory look at my mixed-genre mixes of the past few months hasn't already told you that. I'm even reading "This Must Be the Place" (their biography). Nice mix. I agree with you about the albums in question.

Nice job! My personal favorite T. Heads album would be Remain in Light, which was sort of the soundtrack to my freshman year in college. Well, until the guy in the next room borrowed it. Actually, it was still the soundtrack, but the sound was a bit muddier heard through the walls.

My Heads phase was a little longer than yours as I recall the second & third LPs ruling my summers of '78 & '79. I'm with you on the first three (and all your picks from 'em), but over time have developed an appreciation for their later output.

Well, saw them at CBGBs, ran out and bought the album - 1st one. Saw them live a bunch more times through the early 80s and have been in a Heads phase ever since. There is always one of their CDs sitting close to the stereo. Recently picked up their newly expanded live album. Great stuff.

My favorite is Fear of Music, or maybe More Songs About Buildings and Food. Anyway, I didn't really start listening to them until college, which was a couple of years after those albums had come out. I remember talking about their albums a lot with other guys in the dorm. I think you're right about everyone having had a T-Heads phase.

My TH phase occured when Speaking In Tongues came out. I have it in three different formats -cassette, CD and vinyl. Hell, I even bought the Robert Raushenberg clear plastic limited edition pressing. Like the songs you picked here, though I would have used more from SIT obviously.

My TH phase was extremely brief, I listened to '77 in high school and remember they had some hits in the late 80's, but by then I'd moved on. I almost want to hear this to give them another chance to catch my ear.

just catching up here. how interesting that so many say their heads phase was so brief. why be ashamed? more interesting than, say, the one-idea (but a great idea) ramones. i kept playing that expanded live album again and again last year. their early stuff's best, as usual, but 'speaking in tongues' is way underrated. you are making a statement by excluding 'psycho killer' and the one i miss is 'heaven'. great stuff of course and love love love that opening choice.

great band sean, like yourself i prefer first few albums, tho my 'best of' would be slightly different, but thats natural i guess. I'd be interested to hear the story on 'psycho killer' ? jus heard it too much ?
