Comment:

this mix is not my favorite mix that i've ever made, truth be told. it ended up being really sad and depressing, even though i set out intending it to end on a sort of melancholy high note. this mix is a story of my relationship, as all my mixes sort of are, told by the two bands that were there for the beginning, middle, and end, rilo kiley and death cab for cutie. the first time i heard transatlanticism, it was a few months before the first time i broke up with my ex (and right when the album came out), and it freaked me out so much b/c of its accuracy that i just couldn't listen to it until the break up had actually happened. i can't emphasize to you how literal these songs are to me. "we looked like giants," and "passenger seat" are almost verbatim accounts of events in my relationship, as if ben gibbard was sitting in the backseat, watching us. likewise, i discovered rilo kiley (via their second album) right after the first break up, and they've been there ever since. not to mention that death cab was there at the beginning from years before. the point of this mix is...there's a relationship in turmoil, and from the start our relationship was always one big explosion of misery and passionate love/lust/want need. the rilo kiley songs start with "the good that won't come out," which always makes me think of eternal sunshine of the spotless mind, and sort of serves as the introduction to the rest of the mix. two people in love that have a genuine thing, but can't help but make each other miserable, even when they try not to. in this way, the rilo kiley songs move from utterly miserable and pissed off to hopeful and strong at the end, which is one part of the transformation i myself when through. when jenny lewis sings "if you want me, you'd better speak up, i won't wait," that's how ifeel. no more time for bullshit, sorry. the death cab for cutie songs start at the very beginning of the relationship, falling in love (and there are so beautiful, happy moments, though always so melancholy), and then move through the tumultuous events to the end of the relationship, where the lovers let go and move on, and then the protagonist (moi) is literally laying awake every night thinking about what happened. i was originally going to make the epilogue type track "i will follow you into the dark," but decided against it cause that's just not how the relationship ended at this point in time. ben gibbard's rendition of st. swithen's day is the most melancholy song of longing for someone you used to love that i have ever heard, and it sort of fits the whole relationship and mood of the mix, both lyrically and musically. it was a perfect little addendum. and, i love ben gibbard. the end.
