Comment:

Something pretty different for me here so please indulge me. I have long been intrigued by how many works of American music, poetry, and prose have alluded to a simple bird such as the modest elusive whippoorwill. Perhaps it is this elusive nature that captures the imagination and has helped secure its place in folklore. I have kept this quite short as the whippoorwill might try ones patience after a while. Its a continous mix that starts off with a recording of the distinct sound made by the eponymous bird.

A feather from the Whippoorwill
That everlasting—sings!
Whose galleries—are Sunrise—
Whose Opera—the Springs—
Whose Emerald Nest the Ages spin
Of mellow—murmuring thread—
Whose Beryl Egg, what Schoolboys hunt
In "Recess"—Overhead!

- Emily Dickinson

Interesting and cool. Why not broaden the scope to include Hank Sr.'s "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" (which does not feature the word in the title, but does indeed reference said bird in its first line)?

Oh, the trill of it all. There, I feel better for getting that off me chest.A delightful mixture of musicology and ornithology, and for my comment I make no apology. In the interests of pedantry, I feel bound to point out that it's The Ozark Mountain Daredevils. You'll thank me later.

May Cantona forgive me. I cannot believe I'm reduced to typo-spotting in order to fill my hollow world. I'll tell you what's worse -- it's my birthday today, and still I find myself drawn to AOTM, in my ceaseless search for the "ultimate" mix or some kind of virtual affirmation. I'm a character from a Hermann Hesse novel -- I seek that which does not exist or has already been found yet remains unseen.I'll stop now, Barry. I have no idea what I'm going on about, so what chance have you?

Whoa! I might have imagined doing something like this with robins, but never would have dreamed the poor whipporwill was so musical. Too bad Audobon couldn't hear this . . .

I hurry to my Blue Heaven."

Yes, this looks different from your other mixes, but I really like it. Definitely one of my favorites of yours. A great, original theme, and, of course, great music. I love the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band story song, it seems to be a distant relative of "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." Here's hoping that you will make more mixes like this one. (And thanks for the link).

Firstly I have to echo both blasikin and Luke79! This is unusual, fascinating and no doubt sounds great. Love the Bill Monroe and M. Ward picks - really looking forward to giving the whole thing a listen!

Great execution of an original theme. Big fan of that opener, wasn't aware of the bird's identity until now. That Nitty Gritty song is really fun. And it's nice to see some Greg Brown on a mix - I should do it one of these days.
