Comment:

One of the holy triumvirate of New Zealand indie rock bands who crept quietly into the college radio scene in the early & mid 1980s (alongside the Clean and the Bats), the Chills started with the same lo-fi garage band aesthetic as the Clean, but added a healthy dose of keyboard-driven melancholy & melodicism. Their early singles & EP tracks were nothing short of stunning (captured on the wonderful Kaleidoscope World). Their first full-length album, Brave Words, took off some of the rough edges but was still off-kilter enough (particularly the catch “Rain” and the hyperactive “Look For The Good In Others…”), though the production is a bit murky for my taste. The semi-breakthough album, 1990’s Submarine Bells, was far more polished, with another handful of fine tunes (and another frenetic rocker, “Familiarity Breeds Contempt”). A couple more albums followed, though I kinda lost interest at that point and don’t have the last one. They spent another decade in limbo, but apparently have been doing some recording lately and snuck out an ep a couple years back (not included here).

Submarine Bells was my favorite from this band but I think the greatest hits concept is the way to go with them. Very nice compilation.

"Heavenly pop hit" - so aptly named.

Heavenly pop mix, my pal. Submarine Bells has always been my favorite as well, and like you, I lost interest after Soft Bomb. I know that Martin also released a multi-disc set of outtakes and demos. Surprised that "I Love My Leather Jacket" didn't make the cut.

Brave Words and Soft Bomb are my favourite LP's. I never really got into Submarine Bells but it does have the majestic Heavenly Pop Hit on it. And every time I hear Pink Frost a chill runs down my spine.
