This is a follow-up to a mix I put together exactly five years ago. (How time flies!) I stumbled across most of these tracks via those on-line recommendation doo-dads.Happy New Year!

This is a rather off-hand mix of some old and new stuff, mostly in the pop vein. A few of the tracks came to my attention upon renewed exposure to Radio 1 during a recent visit to the UK. The …

Comment:

This is another cross-section of obscure and eclectic tracks from vinyl, few of which are available on CD. Liner notes below.

Lo-fi youngster Weird Paul starts the proceedings with the nerd anthem, Whalin' the Shit Out of Guys.
A classic Kinks riff provides the inspiration for Foggy Frug, played by Busby Lewis' International Discotheque Orchestra.
Steeler legend Terry Bradshaw manages a surprisingly solid rendition of This Ole House.
Je T'envoye la Main is from Quebecois Joel Denis.
Next, the comedy team of Coyle and Sharp harass a Carpenter.
Shakin 209 is a B side from the B Lovers, an 80s band from Champaign, Illinois.
The Guckenheimer Sauerkraut Band murders Liszt's Second Hungarian Rhapsody. Everyone says, "you have to be good to play this bad."
Ted Knight from the Mary Tyler Moore Show cashes in with Hi Guys.
The most recent track here, Dirty Nails is from a vinyl-only promo for Sloan's Action Pact CD.
Direct from the Divi Divi Beach Hotel, Lloyd and the Jays sing the amusing story of a Honeymoon Couple.
The Swe-Danes included renowned jazz violinist Svend Asmussen and female vocalist Alice Babs. Here they vocalize on Swe-Dane Symphony.
From a test pressing, Finnish punk band Lama perform Mun Pelko, which means "My Fear."
Sammy Davis Jr. introduces Lulu's Back in Town, then sings it in the styles of Mel Torme and Jerry Lewis!
Ojos de Perdida is from Spanish new wavers Los Secretos.
The Amazing Kreskin put out an LP to accompany a silly ESP pendulum game. On Brothers and Sisters, Kreskin will divine the number of siblings you have.
What I Did for Love (from "A Chorus Line") gets a disco treatment from Rod McKuen. This comes from a strange parody LP entitled "Slide Easy In... Disco," on the cover of which appears a hirsute guy's hand scooping out a big glob of Crisco from a can!
Mod bandwagon jumpers Squire jump across to the psychedelic bandwagon with No Time Tomorrow.
Edmundo Ros did a bunch of LPs for Phase 4 with just about any theme you could think up. From the inevitable "hippy" album comes a latin-flavored Hare Krishna that is guaranteed to make your jaw drop.
Nobody's Fool by Haircut 100 is from a flexidisc included in the short-lived Flexipop magazine. This is actually a solo demo from front man Nick Heyward.
Another deliberately bad act, Leona Anderson belts out Rats In My Room.
Norwegian duo Dollie Deluxe recorded a very strange LP that mixed pop tunes with operatic arias. The entire second side is a Beatles medley, but Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll from side 1 appears here.
Got To Get Another Girl is a beaty little tune from a Beatles cash-in LP, performed by The Liverpool Beats.
Golden throat Noel Harrison gets trippy on Sign of the Queen.
The annoying Minipops are next, squeaking Culture Club's Do You Really Want To Hurt Me.
Light rock unknowns The Light Company lightly perform the Monkees' I Wanna Be Free.
And finally (because nothing else could follow it), Harvey Matusow's Jews Harp Band twang their way through a strange tale of urban chaos, War Between Fats and Thins.

MP3s are available for downloading.

Top notch mix and cover as always. I remember buying that Liverpool Beats album becasue it looked like the lowest grade of Beatle rip-offs before mving onto the the EZ listening Beatles records. In an odd way it was pretty fun. I haven't thought about flexipop singles in years. None of my flexis survived the years - I still wish I had the Bongo's live version of Barbarella from a Trouser Press flexi.

There used to be about five different outfits calling themselves The Liverpool Beats. The English recording band (which I guess is what's included here) were a totally different group from the guys who, say, recorded Beatles songs in German and toured German Turnhallen and Bierkellers in the 60s. The rest o this looks just as enticiong, enlightening, and fasscinating as the first two vols. Excellency abounds. Great work, Len.

Bradshaw's gospel album, Until You, was released in 1980. "This Ole House" was written by Stuart Hamblin. His version reached #2 in the country charts in 1954, and Rosemary Clooney's version made it to #3 in the pop charts.
