Comment:
So I’m walking home from work, listening to Gerry MacDonald’s great complilation, If I Had Possession Over Popular Radio, and the song “Bobby’s Girl” comes on. And, yeah, it’s a great tune. But if you listen to the lyrics, basically, it’s this girl saying that now that she’s done with school, her one ambition is life is to hook this guy, who is, in fact, in love with somebody else. So, I’m thinking, “Girlfriend, get a life! Or a clue! Or something!” And then I got to thinking how many love songs are about defining oneself entirely in terms of another person. So I came home, and threw a mess of feel-sad-when-you're-sad-feel-glad-when-you're-glad type of tunes on a CD, and here’s the result. Thanks to wildheartedoutsider for “When the Boy’s Happy,” and of course, to Gerry for inspiring the whole thing.
Feedback:
This looks amazing.
i think i'm only familiar with the sinatra tune, but i know a few of the artists..every time someone says my mix is obscure i end up not knowing anything on theirs..go figure.
love that 5-6 combo. bitchin' mix.
Wow, really inspired mix here! Especially great is the 3-10 stretch and the last 3 songs.
ace of course, starts me thinking of a crying songs vol 2
Cool. Gerry is good mix inspiration.
Nice one. Lots of wonderful tunes. Great Skyliners pick too.
Okay, your discs are done and will be sent today--please count me in for this very, very inspired, fantastically-executed mix. Brilliant and lovely.
Simply fantastic.
One of the best things about this site is seeing a compilation that half the songs you love and half you don't know. You assume that upon hearing the others you will love them as much. So, i'm off to download link wray, anne margaret, tiny tim et al & await to hear them with baited breath.
& what a result it is too, simply fantastique Jen.
Cathartic, confusing kinda, but brilliant, no doubt!
That damm Gerry will do it to you everytime! Keep your head up and your feet dancing.
I feel-sad-when-you're-sad-feel-glad-when-you're-glad, Jenergy. I'm feeling pretty glad after seeing this mix, so I hope you're glad too. Hope Gerry returns to the site soon.
This is super and sweet!
Cool mix! #9,24,25 are my fav's.
Love IS strange, isn't it. I get a twisted kind of amusement out of all those masochist love songs, which is lucky for me, because there are so many really demented ones out there. I have to agree, Bobby's Girl is just about the sickest ever. Someday I hope to hear this and chuckle at Dean Martin crying like a baby; I can only dimly imagine what that Hayseed Dixie tune must be like, but I want to hear it too!
great idea - 'get a grip' springs to my sad mind.
I've just re-read my comment . . . without my sad mind, it is not a very funny comment. Hope all goes well and your week gets better.
Nice! It's difficult to do this sort of thing around such abstract (and yet strongly experienced) feelings - but you've done a great job here. "You Are My Sunshine" is a fantastic choice; one of my favourites.
Thanks all for your comments. Yes, my week has gotten much better & my current legal issues are resolved (an no, they have nothing to do with the content of the mix, rather with possession of a car). Sammy, always happy to hear folks get into new music, but dammit, it's Ann-Margaret, not Anne Margaret (Ann-Margrock is also acceptable). Gobi - "get a grip" is a fine addition to "get a life" & "get a clue."
This mix has elicited more feedback than any other I've seen to date. Let me add my two penn'orth. The mix is riddled with artists I love. I cannot see anything wrong with it, and I've looked. Time to listen, I think.
mmmmmissed this one. i'm really digging all of these old-time compilations of late. well done.
Great stuff Jenergy. Wash that man right outta your hair.
Thanks, Jenny. A really great mix! Love all of this to bits!
