1. What is Art of the Mix?

Art of the Mix is a webiste devoted to the art of making mixed tapes and cds. While there are no sound files available on Art of the Mix, there is a database of thousands of mixes that people have posted to the site. Anyone can submit a song list from a mix they have made, as well as an image that accompanies the mix, and comments about that mix. This submission gets archived in the database and later can be viewed.

While posting mixes is the main feature of the site, there are other aspects to the site, which are described below.

4. How can I listen to these mixes?

You can't through Art of the Mix. Best bet is to contact the person and arrange a trade. To prevent spam, no email addresses are listed on the site.  But you can send people through the site by viewing their profile page or clicking the Send Email link that is on each mix's page.

5. How is the Mix of the Week chosen?

The mix of the week is chosen by community members. Any registered member can choose the mix of the week. Simply go to the MOTW admin page and make your selection. If someone has already made the choice, then of course you will have to wait until next week. Also, you may not choose the mix of the week two weeks in a row.

When you make your selection, the mix will be posted on the homepage with your name listed as the guest editor for the week.

6. Why have a site dedicated to mixed tapes and cds?

Mixed tapes are a kind of creative act as well as a record of a series of decisions at a particular moment in time. It is an expression, a pastiche in which a person juxtaposes songs and sounds. The completed tape has a tone and makes a statement. Moreover, the variation between different mixed tapes is tremendous. They refract and reflect a period of time, a sense of place, emotional states, aesthetic sensibilities, etc.

There is great joy in making a mix. If you have ever killed a Saturday afternoon obessessing over what song should go next, you get it.
