  • Album Review: Restless People – Restless People
  • of filling a quick, fast opening set of new material on its first notable festival billing, this band decided to throw their best, fastest, most crowd- and fan-pleasing material up, and make that their album. Restless People's almost attention-deficit musicality supersedes many of its dance-ready merits. There is New Order in it, but no Depeche Mode. The raw beats undoubtedly exist and persist, but Restless People has little of the refined production that made its forebears sound almost intangibly ...

  • Arcade Fire
  • suggests a certain amount of nostalgia as well. There are Springsteen and Neil Young, but they mine the '80s and '90s as well, shuffling in the synths and pulsing dance beats of New Order and Depeche Mode. Bloat, however, occupies The Suburbs just as it does Orange County. The album inevitably sprawls too far; a few songs could have been sacrificed without losing the central conceit. "Sprawl I" is uncomfortably maudlin, and "The Suburbs (Continued)" only unmoors the complicated emotional balance ...

  • Movie Review: The American
  • Okay, by now, you've seen the previews, you know George Clooney is in it, and that appears to be one of those spy thrillers that guys like Clooney and Matt Damon have a penchant for as of late. What you really need to know, though, if you're on the fence about this film is that it is directed by Anton Corbijn, whose best known as an iconic photographer for the likes of U2, Depeche Mode, and Echo & The Bunnymen, among others. As a photographer, he's long been one of my favorites, showing ...

  • Depeche Mode’s Martin Gore and Vince Clarke at it again
  • Sorry to report, but the recent union between Depeche Mode founders Martin Gore and Vince Clarke isn't for a new Depeche Mode LP, an extended tour, or even new tracks for a greatest hits release. However, as Confucius once uttered: "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." And the duo have taken the first step to what may be a fruitful 2011. On August 27th, Clark shared via Twitter that he and Gore had begone work on the track "Zaat". According to our friends at Slicing Up ... Eyeballs, expect the "techno-ish" track to appear on Clarke's forthcoming Erasure album. While little is known about the release, outside of Gore's sporadic tweets, Erasure bandmate Andy Bell has been dropping by Gore's recording studio in Maine for impromtu sessions. The duo has been submitting songs to Mute Records' president Daniel Miller this summer, but an album release date has yet to be set. If that weren't enough, Gore is set join ex-Depeche Mode member Alan Wilder in Santa Ana, California ...

"Everything in dance music these days is so cut up with Ableton, with effects on everything and loads of plug-ins," says Karkousse. "We wanted to get away from all that." The choice of method was also a nod to Depeche Mode's 1981 debut Speak & Spell, which the group reportedly listened to each morning on their way to the studio. • Depeche Mode - Sounds Of The Universe (from MusicOMH)
  • It's tempting to wonder how this album would be received if it surfaced under plain cover.Such is Depeche Mode's influence on the multitude of new electronic pop thrown at us this year, it's clear the new offering would fit in immediately. Yet while said 'new pop' might throw its arms around the likes of Just Can't Get Enough and Enjoy The Silence, it would have more trouble embracing a song like Jezebel. And therein lies the appeal. Only a minute of opener In Chains is needed to bring realisatio......

Anton Corbijn directed the "Headhunter" video and I watched it again recently and returned to those feelings I had as a young kid watching this weird black-and-white, minimalist architecture. The singer/songwriter, who is set to head into the studio with Depeche Mode producer Gareth Jones in September, has written 13 songs for the follow up to her 2009 debut 'First Love'. • Of the bands to emerge at the dawn of the '80s, Depeche Mode are matched only by New Order and U2 in chart terms, with an astonishing strikerate of 42 Top 30 hits in 25 years. This "Best Of" includes 18 of them, ranging from 1981's "Just Can't Get Enough" to "Martyr" (left off last year's "Playing The Angel"), and presents them in non-chronological order, a job effectively done by the previous The "Singles 81-85" and "86-98" sets. • From suburban advocates of bouncy electro-pop to stadium-straddling masters of excess; Depeche Mode's trajectory has been remarkable. Certainly more remarkable than their songs which, for the most part, have been nowhere near as thrilling as many would have you believe. Alas, this triple CD of remixes is as uneven as the band's own work, with the odd clever reworking (Kruder & Dorfmeister's magnificent "Useless", Dave Clarke's subtle "Dream On") undermined by the kind of dated, bloated workouts ......

  • Twenty-nine years in, Essex's electro-pop overlords Depeche Mode are still layering innocent melodies with S&M fantasies. Following on from the dark shades and light touch of 2005's Playing the Angel, the band stay true to their industrial roots on hypnotic invocation Peace and the gently sneering In Sympathy. They're most alive, however, when their spacey bleeps and shuddering keyboards expose their intrinsic, intriguing sleaziness. Shards of chilling guitar pierce through Dave Gahan's wrinkle-......

Occasionally, they're lyrically banal, with a tendency towards pl......

  • Depeche Mode - Remixes 81-04 (from Uncut)
  • From suburban advocates of bouncy electro-pop to stadium-straddling masters of excess; Depeche Mode's trajectory has been remarkable. Certainly more remarkable than their songs which, for the most part, have been nowhere near as thrilling as many would have you believe. Alas, this triple CD of remixes is as uneven as the band's own work, with the odd clever reworking (Kruder & Dorfmeister's magnificent "Useless", Dave Clarke's subtle "Dream On") undermined by the kind of dated, bloated workouts ......

  • Depeche Mode - Playing The Angel (from Ink19)
  • After several mediocre releases following the departure of sound sculptor mastermind Alan Wilder, Depeche Mode fire on all cylinders with their latest effort. Playing The Angel finds the British trio reenergized and more focused than ever. The album's opener, "A Pain That I'm Used To," kicks things off with pounding beats. Reminiscent of their earlier work, this track sees Depeche Mode at their peak. The gospel-inspired "John The Revelator" follows with brooding bass and vocal treatments of the ......

  • DEPECHE MODE - Playing The Angel (from Aquarius Records)
  • Depeche Mode are back, and they're poised to bring out the goth in ya! After some highly publicized tumultuous times on the part of lead singer Dave Gahan, it seems the group has regained some stability and creative flourishes. That said, Playing The Angel is still coming from a very very dark place. Martin Gore still expertly handles the bulk of the songwriting, but Playing The Angel is all about David Gahan's imposing downcast vocals. They're so impossibly burdened by the weight of the world. ......

  • Depeche Mode - Sounds Of The Universe (from Delusions of Adequacy)
  • Depeche Mode, now completing their third decade as the world's finest purveyors of electronic mope rock, continue to defy the laws of pop culture. The band that would go on to influence everyone from the Crystal Method to the Killers saw their commercial peak back at the dawn of the 1990's, when hair metal was giving way to grunge and frontman Dave Gahan pleaded with us to "reach out and touch faith." But it wasn't too much longer before the Mode looked ready to retire their synths and S&M gea......

  • DEPECHE MODE - Sounds of the Universe (from Billboard)
  • While most of its '80s electro-pop contemporaries have faded into semiobscurity, Depeche Mode continues to produce darkly atmospheric tracks about love, lust and death that have the vulnerability and immediacy of a shared secret. The chirps and bleeps that marked the band's debut, "Speak & Spell," gradually gave way to emotionally raw, expansive songs under the guidance of songwriter Martin Gore. After nearly 30 years, the trio—now comprising Gore, Dave Gahan and Andrew Fletcher—still imbue ......

  • Depeche Mode - Sounds of the Universe (from URB)
  • "I was marching to the wrong drum/With the wrong scum/Pissing out the wrong energy," sings Depeche Mode frontman Dave Gahan on the song "Wrong." And it feels so right. As lead singles go, this one - featuring the admonitions of an apocalyptic preacher atop careening tone tracers - makes a compelling point as it reintroduces the downturned keen of this retro-futuristic group on its 12th album, Sounds of the Universe. That same "wrong" energy doesn't flow through each of the 13 tracks. But there i......

  • Depeche Mode - Sounds of the Universe (from Pitchfork)
  • "They're a singles band," sniffed a friend, dismissing Depeche Mode's influential career. Even if one were to agree with that blithe assessment, there's no way Depeche Mode could be dismissed as just a singles band, given their track record on the charts and in the clubs, a string of hits that have hung in there to varying degrees of ubiquity. Sure, the singles sometimes remain standouts, but the rest of the tracks-- especially on albums like Music for the Masses and Violator-- are hardly filler......

  • Depeche Mode - Sounds of the Universe (from LA Times)
  • The best pop music is a work in progress, as artists refine and reignite their core sounds and vision one album at a time. In that way, Depeche Mode is a tighter operation than ever, a band of world-weary New Wave survivors still working from an early template, but who began to do their most lasting work only at the end of the '80s, with provocative statements like "Stripped" and "Personal Jesus." That bleak tone is frequently recaptured on their newest release, "Sounds of the Universe," beginni......

  • Depeche Mode - Sounds of the Universe (from Pop Matters)
  • It's probably safe to say that most of us aren't expecting Depeche Mode to blow our minds anymore. Which isn't to take away from the many excellent songs they've produced over the years, or the undeniable influence they've had in shaping the modern pop landscape. It's just that this band, along with the Cure, R.E.M., and any other band that was awarded its canonization when the first wave of post-punk was still stalking the underground, is nearing a time in its lifespan where we've really gotten......

  • Depeche Mode - Sounds of the Universe (from Spin)
  • This is Depeche Mode's 12th studio album, but it's only the second they've released since the dance-rock style they helped invent caught fire among crate-digging hipsters half their age. On 2005's noisy Playing the Angel, frontperv Dave Gahan and his bandmates seemed eager to prove that they were still as edgy as heirs like Interpol and the Rapture ("A Pain That I'm Used To" was the ominous lead track). Their point apparently made, Sounds of the Universe comes on a bit softer, with less industr......

  • Depeche Mode - Sounds of the Universe (from bbc)
  • As if to underline the artlessness of 90 percent of 'modern' pop acts who currently trade in 80s recreations, acts like U2 and the Pet Shop Boys are currently back to doing what they used to do so well. It's as if they're saying: ''hold on, we're not dead yet. stop dancing on graves that haven't even been dug.'' And now, joining 2009's roster of middle aged marvels, here come Depeche Mode. Sounds Of The Universe, the band's first album for four years reveals, here a trio who still sound just as ......

  • Depeche Mode - Sounds of the Universe (from Rolling Stone)
  • For their new album, Depeche Mode said they were using analog synthesizers and other vintage gear to "conjure up images of the universe and space travel." But the result sounds like a time machine back to the Eighties. The pulsing single "Wrong" oozes classic synth-pop angst, but with Commodore 64-style beats and laser-tag keyboards, ballads like "Peace" are comically New Romantic, and the dour "Spacewalker" sounds like the score to Star Trek rewritten by a deeply bummed-out robot. Depeche Mode ......

  • Depeche Mode - Sounds of the Universe (from Entertainment Weekly)
  • Even those born in a bat cave would have a tough time sustaining the level of broody nocturnal drama that England's dark lords of dance-rock have maintained for nearly 30 years. Somehow, though, on Sounds of the Universe they still sound genuinely inspired, especially on tracks like the fragile "In Sympathy" and the hypnotic "Peace." Lead single "Wrong" revisits classic black-heart Mode, but there's something gentler here, too — not so much a softening as a graceful evolution. B+ Download This......

  • Depeche Mode - Ultra / Exciter - Rhino (from Filter Magazine)
  • Having crawled back from the drug-alcohol-nervous-breakdown-suicide attempt wreckage of its '93 tour, Depeche Mode somehow survived to record not only a battered conclusion to a despairing decade, but opened a new century with a work that hinted at a renewed sense of hope. The chronology is important, because 1997's Ultra and 2001's Exciter decisively proved that, along with the Cure and U2, Depeche Mode had become one of the most enduringly creative bands in history (considering the Stones have......

  • Depeche Mode - Best Of, Volume 1 (from Junkmedia)
  • Despite the multitude of platinum and gold records that now checker their walls, the evolution from early 80s synth-pop fops to arena-filling demigods wasn't an easy one for Depeche Mode. Arguably no thriving band today has experienced so many highs and lows, yet remained so infallible like these progenitors of dark electronic pop. In the several years following singer Dave Gahan's near-fatal heroin indulgences, keyboardist Alan Wilder's departure, and various other inner turmoil, the Basildon......

  • Depeche Mode - The Best of Vol. 1 (from Pitchfork)
  • At this point I have accepted my role as one of Pitchfork's go-to "Best of" and reissue guys. I'm old and cranky. My interests these days are bourbon, my bicycle, and the collected works of Al Green. And Pitchfork has already reviewed approximately 90,000 Depeche Mode albums, reissues, and compilations. (Nitsuh Abebe alone has reviewed 67,843 of them.) What's possibly left to say about these 18 songs except that capitalism marches ever onward? Or that if you really needed to hear a few songs off......
