- Sky Larkin releases new album
- !, The Long Winters and Boat, who break into a spontaneous round of applause. John Goodmanson kept it on there, epitomising the notion that Kaleide may be about science, but it's also about love, friendship and romance, good and bad. It's a heart in a lab coat. - side of the highway - but it turned out to be a dirt track to a railroad. And by the side of the tracks was a pile of bones that had been picked clean, probably by a mountain lion. So it's about that apocalypse fantasy moment of what you could do if you had no time." It's a fable that ends in a gang-chant of "one pile of bones so they'll know we were friends", assisted by members of Seattle musical mates Telekinesis!, The Long Winters and Boat, who break into a spontaneous round of applause. - Long Winters Frontman John Roderick Talks Kathleen Edwards Collaboration
- [Homepage photo by Eric Ryan Anderson] John Roderick has waited his entire life to have his own home studio, to serve as yet another way for him to make music on his own terms. But when he finally got that studio, he began wishing for an authority figure. "I've kinda worked really hard to get to a place where no one can tell me what to do, you know," the Long Winters frontman tells Paste. "That's been my goal for my whole creative life, to get to a place where nobody's the boss of me. And now ... a Wes Anderson film." Much like when the Long Winters were first establishing themselves with The Worst You Can Do Is Harm, the encouraging words Roderick and Edwards received soon turned into offers to contribute to the album, from Laura Veirs and Tucker Martine, to Death Cab for Cutie's Chris Walla, to the Minus 5's Scott McCaughey. "The whole adventure had just taken a life of its own where everybody, all these friends that we bumped into and talked to, all said, 'Oh my god, how exciting! You ...

- The Long Winters - Putting the Days to Bed (from Ink19)
- The third record from Seattle's The Long Winters is as fine a collection of short, punchy indie rock tunes as you could find in 2006. Lead songwriter John Roderick's off-kilter lyrical sensibilities and occasionally oddball vocals are offset by an almost unerring sense of melody. It's a combination that should appeal to fans of bands like The Shins and Death Cab for Cutie."Unkind girlish walk/ Like a deed to the world without the talk," Roderick sings enigmatically on the harmony-laden opener "P......

- The Long Winters - Putting the Days to Bed (from Entertainment Weekly)
- An underappreciated songwriter, The Long Winters frontman John Roderick hasa flair for undercutting his hopeless romanticism with stingingself-awareness. The singer's engaging internal battle is apparent on Putting the Days to Bed's country-flecked "Hindsight," where he longingly looks back on a tornrelationship with barbs like "You never told me your secrets/So I guessthey stay safe with me." Marked by clean-cut choruses that alternatebetween punchy and pretty, Roderick's knotty tales never wra......

- The Long Winters - Putting the Days to Bed (from Stylus Magazine)
- One has to begin with it: this album does not sound like "The Commander Thinks Aloud." The centerpiece of the Long Winters' Ultimatum EP, John Roderick's ditty about re-entering Earth's atmosphere was a great glass tower of a song, a more blatant studio construction than any of the sunny, skewed guitar pop the Winters spent two albums and the rest of Ultimatum refining. Putting the Days to Bed, Roderick and company's third full-length, isn't an album of "The Commander Thinks Aloud"'s, or even ......

- The Long Winters - The Worst You Can Do Is Harm (from Pitchfork)
- WASHINGTON-- In a stunning move reflecting yet another shift in our nation's defense strategy, the Pentagon today unveiled plans to resuscitate a controversial weapons project that has been neglected for over a decade. "Ladies and gentleman, tomorrow's battles will not be fought on the ground, in the air, or even under the water, but will require entirely new military technology to be developed," Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld announced in a press conference t......

- The Long Winters - When I Pretend to Fall (from Pitchfork)
- I tore the shrinkwrap off this album and the smell of dandelions spilled out. Dandelions, and breezy windfalls. My knees got weak from the aroma, the sense of a smart man writing what was on his mind, and not being so cynical that he doused his thoughts in the petals of harmony. Instead, he doused his music in stories. They could be real, they could be fake, but you don't know for sure because they're just too vague for interpretation, and you don't wanna project your own shit onto m......

- The Long Winters - When I Pretend to Fall (from Tiny Mix Tapes)
- John Roderick's Long Winters are a pretty little band with a pretty little name that conjures up snow days (naturally) and snowy music, something like Low or the Early Day Miners. Their previous album, The Worst You Can Do is Harm, was a forgettable affair with a couple of gems ("Carparts") that made the release of a new 'un something of interest. At first listen, When I Pretend to Fall seems equally forgettable, even a little ingratiating on jesus-christ-so-fuckin'-earnest numbers like "C......

- The Long Winters - Putting the Days to Bed (from Prefix Magazine)
- I sometimes wonder what makes certain people who have a way with words choose which path to follow: become a songwriter or focus on non-musical prose and poetry. John Roderick, the singer-songwriter at the center of the Long Winters, could seemingly craft some killer short stories. The problem on Putting the Days to Bed is that the music that accompanies Roderick's witty, insightful lyrics usually isn't half as appealing. The music on Putting the Days to Bed basically falls into two categories: ......

- The Long Winters - Putting the Days to Bed (from Pitchfork)
- The Long Winters frontman-cum-producer John Roderick may have spent formative years in Anchorage, Alaska but there's nothing overtly chilly about the Seattle quartet's third full-length, Putting the Days to Bed. Never mind that on "Hindsight" Roderick deliberates about holding a snowball of a girl and croons about "craving the sun" (all in that crazy awesome voice of his: part dude from Okkervil River, part Craig Finn), this stuff's about as wintry as possible, arriving mid-s......

- LONG WINTERS, THE - The Worst You Can Do Is Harm (from Aquarius Records)
- From the lead-off track, I might have expected The Long Winters' debut full length to be somewhat of a dour downer of an album, but by the second song things definitely pick up. Barsuk has likened mainman John Roderick's songwriting style and vocal delivery to Smog and/or The Band, but for me it brought to mind a number of other artists. Robert Pollard/Guided by Voices or David Gedge/Wedding Present or Andy Partidge/XTC are just a few. To be honest, I'm really not sure if I found this album appe......

- The Long Winters - Putting The Days To Bed (from Lost At Sea)
- "Hindsight" is 20-20 and so is songwriter John Roderick's vision of what a glorious pop-rock record should be. Overflowing with vibrant, solar-powered melodies and skyscraper-sized hooks, Putting The Days To Bed, the third full-length release from The Long Winters, is " ... familiar, but not too familiar," to borrow a line from the guns-a-blazin' rocker "(It's A) Departure." Like 2003's When I Pretend To Fall, Putting The Days To Bed dispenses large doses of guitar-driven ecstasy, but balances o......

- The Long Winters - Putting the Days to Bed (from Delusions of Adequacy)
- Coming up with RIYLs is extremely difficult for such a unique band as The Long Winters, so the ones listed here should not necessarily be taken literally but used more as a point of reference. For example, musically speaking, John Vanderslice and The Long Winters may not be synonymous, but like his Barsuk labelmate, The Long Winters' mainman John Roderick eschews the rules of commercial rock and instead uses music as more of an art form to express his literate narratives. But don't expect any s......

- The Long Winters - Ultimatum EP (from Delusions of Adequacy)
- Ultimatum, the first release from the Long Winters since 2003's When I Pretend to Fall, more firmly establishes this act in the current canon of rising indie-pop wunderkids. Lead singer/songwriter John Roderick more clearly highlights his unique songwriting style on this much more experimental release and takes a place alongside fellow artists John Vanderslice and John Darnielle. The four new songs on Ultimatum offer a new twist on the Long Winters' sound, adding in string quartets and analog sy......

- The Long Winters - Putting The Days To Bed (from Nude as the News)
- Sometimes a band is all about a voice. Not neccesarily a voice in the general, creative sense, but an actual human voice that leaves its distinguishing mark on every bit of a body of work and begins to elicit trust and familiarity out of those who hear it repeatedly. You could say Spoon, Modest Mouse, hell, even R.E.M. might fit into that category, and you can add to that list John Roderick and the Long Winters. Roderick's singing style hinges on his overpronunciation of words (and non-words), ......
