"Respect"/The Rationals (11/26/66, three weeks). One of the more beloved artifacts of the Michigan scene of the 1960s, this version of "Respect" charted before Aretha Franklin's did. • SCOTT MORGAN album out NOW on CD, vinyl & digital
  • , but certainly provides a nice, safe haven for the musical form when delivered properly. Of course, this is nothing new for Morgan, who's been doing the same thing with that type of music since the mid-'60s when, as the leader of the Rationals, he scored a major regional hit by garage-ifying (and/or punk-ifying) Otis Redding's "Respect" long before Aretha recorded her now-legendary version. In other words, Morgan was a pioneer of the form, doing it before it was a conscious and deliberate career ...

  • generation bootleg video of people they don't know, lip-synching on a long forgotten TV show while a bunch of bored teenagers do the frug in the background. That time finally came, and I settled in with a cold drink and some potato chips to enhance the viewing experience. Things started out well enough, with some footage of Detroit garage greats the Rationals (I'm a big garage punk fan, too) and rolled right along to a variety of 1966/67 stuff, all groovy. In fact there were (including today's selection ...

  • , Bob Seger, and the Rationals -- much of Terry Knight & the Pack's back catalog is tied up by Cameo-Parkway and unlikely to see release on CD reissue, as that label historically has done little with its vaults. Your best bet is looking for the out-of-print LPs, the most comprehensive of which is the obscure early-1970s two-LP retrospective on ABKCO, Mark, Don & Terry 1966-67 (also known as Funk-Off). 01 - Numbers 02 - What's On Your Mind 03 - Where Do You Go 04 - Your'e A Better Man Than I 05 ...

  • Morgan is a Detroit rock legend whose band The Rationals had the MC5 open for them and almost landed a young Iggy Pop as their drummer. He also formed Sonic's Rendezvous with Fred "Sonic" Smith and Scott Asheton. "Fallin' For You" continues the legend with a nice slice of Motown rock 'n' soul. And I gotta show a little local love - AluKarD come from here in Miami. Don't let the "rock / hip-hop" tags fool you: There's no Limp Bizkit going on here. • Scott Morgan releases solo album
  • high energy rock realms as he delivers a battery of six classic soul covers and five rocking originals that touch on almost every aspect of his storied career. Morgan first became a part of the then-burgeoning Detroit music scene in 1964 as the teenage lead singer for The Rationals. Widely considered to be the roots of the high energy rock and roll sound pioneered by fellow Detroiters the MC5 (who opened for the Rationals on numerous occasions), the band recorded a string of singles over the next ... ," Scott explains, "so I wanted to pursue the same plan but do it in Detroit. We got together some of the best musicians here and we went into Jim Diamond's studio. We just went in every day for about a week and knocked stuff out; we'd never played together as a band before the record. We were gonna call it The Irrationals because my first band, The Rationals, had a two CD set come out on the UK label Ace last year. But since it's not the Rationals, we decided to drop that idea and call it Scott Morgan ...

  • FISTFUL OF DOLLARS
  • like more than 7" singles, it's split 7" single, which means this Thermals/Cribs split is nearly too much for me to handle. The Cribs new song, "So Hot Now," is all right and everything, but it's the Thermals I love, and their song, "Separate," off their upcoming album, that's putting this on the list. "Separate" isn't quite as spastic as some of their other singles, but there's something about Hutch Harris's voice that will always do it for me. And this does it.►$5.00 . ► The Rationals ... - "Rationalism!" Maybe there's a little hometown bias here, but to me, pretty much no one can top the garage rock of the Rationals. It's equal parts Motor City gritty and Motown smooth, but unfortunately, they never saw much success outside of Southeastern Michigan. Leave it to the Brits at Ace Records to bring them back out again. This 7" starts out with "I Gotta Go Now (Out on the Floor)" and "Poor Dog (Who Can't Wag His Own Tail)," b/w the very classic "Wang Dang Doodle." Good, fun summertime music ...

  • with a few local groups in Detroit before joining Sonic's Rendezvous Band in 1974, with Fred "Sonic" Smith of the MC5, Scott Morgan of the Rationals, and Gary Rasmussen of the Up; the band earned a potent reputation as a live act, but record labels were wary and the group slowly faded out by the end of the decade. In 2002, Ron Asheton and Scott Asheton joined J Mascis + the Fog for a tour in which they performed a handful of Stooges classics from the group's first two albums. The show's were ...

  • This story begins in Detroit in 1964. A gentleman by the name of Scott Morgan was the lead singer and guitarist of a garage band called The Rationals. They never had a big hit, altough the single Respect (recorded a year before Aretha Franklin scored big time with her own version) did break the Billboard 100 in 1966. Arguably the first in a long line of classic garage blues bands from the area (Amboy Dukes/Iggy & the Stooges/MC5/Mitch Ryder/White Stripes/Soledad Brothers/Dirtbombs/Detroit Cobras/ etc etc etc), like most ... beat groups of their era they took up arms after being wooed by the sounds of The Who, The Kinks, The Stones and that other lot a-blasting across the Atlantic. Guess who? Using The Kinks version as a blueprint for their brief career, The Rationals’ 1968 version of ‘I Need You’ replicates the original, right down to the gutterpunk feedback at the start. Difference is, their version is about twice as fast and twice as raw. Better screaming guitar solo too. I went to see John McCusker, Roddy Woomble ...
